Speak with a specialist about this piece:

No Daytona generates more desire than the Rainbow, the gem-set flagship that transforms Rolex's legendary chronograph into a work of high jewelry. Its defining feature is a bezel set with graduated sapphire baguettes that sweep through the entire spectrum, a feat of sourcing and matching so demanding that only a handful can be produced each year. Coupled with diamond-set lugs and vivid sapphire hour markers, it is among the rarest and most instantly recognizable watches Rolex makes.

Cased in 18-karat white gold, the 40mm Daytona carries a bezel of square-cut sapphires graduating from violet through blue, green, yellow, and red, while brilliant diamonds pavé the lugs and crown guards. The glossy black dial provides contrast, its baguette-cut sapphire markers echoing the bezel's colors above three crystal-finished subdials that shimmer like frost. Screw-down pushers flank the crown to work the chronograph, and the matching white gold Oyster bracelet completes the spectacle.

Around the bezel of this Daytona runs a rainbow, and it is the whole point of the watch. Where a normal Daytona wears an engraved or ceramic tachymeter, this one is ringed with square-cut sapphires graduated through the entire visible spectrum, red bleeding into orange, orange into yellow, then green, blue, indigo, and violet, all the way around the dial in a continuous arc of colour. It is a wearable rainbow, and the effect is joyful and dazzling, a band of pure spectrum encircling the black dial and catching the light in every hue at once. Few watches are so openly, unapologetically fun, and the rainbow bezel turns the most serious of racing chronographs into a riot of colour.

The idea traces back to one of Rolex's most spectacular and celebrated creations, the Rainbow Daytona, which is widely regarded as one of the most difficult gem-set watches the brand has ever made. Setting a rainbow is far harder than it sounds, because it requires sourcing sapphires in every colour of the spectrum, each one of matched size, cut, and quality, and then arranging them so that the transition from one hue to the next is perfectly smooth and even. Sapphires occur naturally in a huge range of colours, but finding them in precisely the right graduated shades, and in matching grades, is an enormous undertaking, which is exactly why a true rainbow of stones is such a coveted and impressive thing. This watch channels that famous rainbow look, its bezel a full arc of colour, its dazzle a tribute to one of the boldest gem watches in the modern era.

The colour does not stop at the bezel, because the dial carries it inward. In place of ordinary hour markers sit baguette-cut sapphires, each echoing the colour of the section of the rainbow bezel nearest to it, so that the spectrum is repeated as points of colour around the dial itself, floating against the deep black ground. Those coloured markers tie the dial to the bezel, pulling the rainbow into the centre of the watch, and against the black they glow like scattered gems. The lugs and crown guards are set with brilliant white diamonds, framing the case in bright fire and setting off the colour of the sapphires, so that the whole watch sparkles from every angle, colour at the bezel and dial, white brilliance at the flanks.

For all that spectacle, it remains a Daytona underneath, which means it is at heart a racing chronograph. The black dial carries three subdials, worked here with a soft crystalline sheen, and a central sweeping hand that times an event to the second when the pushers flanking the crown are pressed, the counters tracking the elapsed minutes and hours. The Daytona was born in 1963 as an instrument for racing drivers, named for the famous American speedway, and beneath all the colour and sparkle that racing soul is intact, the chronograph a real and working complication rather than mere decoration. Inside runs the brand's superb self-winding chronograph movement, and the Oyster case remains waterproof, so the watch keeps the substance of a serious tool even as it wears the most flamboyant of dressings.

That contrast is exactly what makes a rainbow Daytona so appealing. It takes the most famous and most capable of luxury chronographs, a watch with genuine racing heritage and faultless engineering, and drenches it in colour and diamonds, fusing the seriousness of the instrument with the pure joy of a rainbow. It is bold and playful and completely without restraint, the opposite of a quiet dress watch, a piece for someone who wants their watch to sparkle in every colour and does not care to be discreet about it. The black dial anchors all that colour, giving the eye somewhere calm to rest amid the spectrum, and the result is a watch that is at once an icon, a jewel, and a celebration.

That is what makes this rainbow Daytona so striking. It wraps one of the world's great chronographs in a full arc of graduated sapphires and a frame of diamonds, echoing the colour onto the dial itself, so that the whole watch becomes a wearable rainbow with a serious racing heart. It is dazzling, joyful, and utterly confident, colour and light from every angle, a watch that turns the act of telling the time into a small burst of celebration.
