White comes with Roman numerals here and with nothing else. Across the range white is one of five grounds offered in both marker treatments, applied and Roman, and it carries that choice on most of the references that hold it. On the 40mm platinum pair it does not. The reference offers fourteen configurations across thirteen grounds, and the one ground presented twice is ice blue, which appears with applied markers and with Roman numerals. White is not doubled here, so the buyer takes the numerals or takes a different dial. That is worth knowing before treating the roster as a set of open decisions, because on this reference only one of the thirteen actually is.
The ground is flat, opaque and constant, holding a single value in a dark room and a bright one, which separates it from every metallic and graded dial the reference carries. On platinum that constancy is doing real work. The case reflects close to neutral and slightly grey, and a dial that also shifts with the light would blur the boundary between the two; white holds still and the boundary stays firm. The numerals are applied in white gold, tall and narrow with fine serifs, standing proud with polished faces that catch light at a different angle from the flat surface beneath. At 40mm the ring has room the smaller case cannot give it, and Roman characters benefit from that more than markers would, since they are read as characters rather than positions and crowding slows them down. The character at three gives way to the date window. The case is 40mm with the flat wide lugs and low band standard to the model, the bezel is fluted, and the President bracelet closes it in polished semi-circular links. White also sets a standard the rest of the dial has to meet. On a surface with no depth and no variation, any softness in the printing or any inconsistency in an applied numeral shows immediately, because nothing is drawing the eye away from it. The minute track runs unbroken around the outer edge and the text is held to the minimum the model requires. A plain dial hides nothing, which makes it the easiest of the flat grounds to judge and the hardest to execute.
This is the configuration where the calendar works with no compromise anywhere, and the reason is the ground. The day and date discs are printed on flat backgrounds that have to match the dial, and on a metallic surface no printed value can follow the range, on a gradient the match holds at one radius only, and on a stone or a shell it is impossible. On flat white it is exact, so the two openings read as parts of the dial rather than as insets placed into it and the frames become decorative rather than corrective. The day is written out in full at twelve in words rather than shortened to three letters. Both discs jump instantaneously at midnight rather than creeping through the hour before, and the movement runs roughly seventy hours off a full wind. Everything is operated through the crown alone. What the model declines to do belongs in the same account. No Day-Date has ever carried a second time zone, a chronograph or any indication beyond the calendar, so the dial holds two windows, a numeral ring and the hands and nothing else has ever been added to it. On a plain white ground that restraint is visible rather than merely true, since there is nothing on the surface to distract from how little is being asked of it.
White is one of only three grounds reaching all four case metals and both case sizes, alongside mother-of-pearl set with diamonds and the paved dial, and it is the plain one of the three. That makes it the reference point for the whole model: the one dial a buyer can specify in any metal at either diameter and use to compare the cases directly, since white looks the same wherever it is fitted while mother-of-pearl takes on the tone of its surroundings and the paved dial removes the dial from the comparison altogether. Thirteen grounds are offered on platinum at 40mm and only five cross to the smaller platinum case; white is among them, with blue ombre, mother-of-pearl set and ice blue in both its forms. Two references carry the roster, this one with a fluted bezel and 228396TBR with a set one. That also makes white the ground to use when comparing the ten references in this block. It appears on every metal at this size, so the Everose, yellow gold, white gold and platinum versions of a 40mm Day-Date can be set beside one another with the dial held constant and only the case changing. No other unset ground permits that test.
A white Roman dial on a fluted platinum case is the most conservative watch the reference makes and the one that gives away least. Nothing is set, the bezel is the treatment the model has always carried, and the dial belongs to the oldest reading of what a Day-Date is. What a collector sees instead is the weight, and the fact that a plain white dial with white gold numerals on a case that could be white gold is a combination almost nobody chooses deliberately unless they know exactly what they have bought. That gap between appearance and substance is the argument for platinum in general, and this configuration widens it as far as the reference allows. For a buyer who wants the model in its most traditional form and the metal in its least visible one, the two decisions meet here. The numerals are the only concession, and they are the one the model has been making since the beginning.
