There is no color anywhere on this watch and no warm metal either. The case is white gold, the bezel is set, the bracelet is set through its center links, the dial is shell and the markers are baguette-cut diamonds with no gold framing them. Every surface is white, near-white or colorless, and the only variation across the whole piece is in how each one returns light. That makes it the most tonally unified configuration the model builds, and it is a very different proposition from the fully set watches in yellow gold or Everose, where the case supplies a strong color and the stones sit against it.
Mother-of-pearl is the inner layer of a mollusk, cut into a slice thin enough to serve as a dial and laid over a base, built from stacked platelets that split light as it passes through and returns. The ground shifts between white, cream and pale green as the wrist moves and never settles, and each slice carries a figure belonging to it alone. On white gold the case adds no tone of its own, so what the shell shows is closer to the material than it is on any other metal in the range. The markers are identical baguettes running the whole way around, laid flat rather than raised, returning light in broad planes from a single angle while the shell scatters it across a curve. The bezel carries stones around its full circumference and the bracelet carries them through the center link of each three-piece section, seated on a compound curve and tapering toward a concealed clasp. The case is 36mm with the wide flat lugs and low band standard to the model. The bracelet is where the softening is most visible. On a warm case the stones running down the center links read as a bright line against a colored ground and the eye follows it from the clasp to the lugs; on white gold the line and the metal beside it sit within a narrow range of values, so what registers at a distance is a bracelet that seems slightly brighter rather than one that is obviously set. It takes a closer look to see what the specification actually is, and that delay is much of what the metal is chosen for.
On a watch where every surface is either set or reflective, the two calendar openings are the only things that absorb rather than return, and they end up doing all the work of orientation. The day arc at twelve and the date window at three are flat, still and rectangular, and the eye finds them immediately because there is nothing else on the watch behaving that way. The day is spelled out in full in words rather than shortened to three letters, which is what the model exists to do and what fixes the width of the upper opening. Both openings are framed, since an unframed edge would show the shell in section and a printed disc needs a boundary against a surface that will not hold a value for it to match. Both discs advance instantaneously at midnight rather than turning through the preceding hour, and the movement carries roughly seventy hours off a full wind. Setting runs entirely through the crown, and the absence of correctors in the case band matters here more than on a plain reference, since an opening cut into the flank would sit between two set surfaces. The hands are the other element the eye has to find, and they are working against everything around them. Polished white gold on a bright dial surrounded by bright surfaces leaves them very little contrast to rely on, so their length, their taper and the angle of their faces carry the whole burden of legibility. They read best when they cross the darker part of the shell and least well when the ground has gone pale, which makes the watch marginally harder to read at some moments than at others.
Nine grounds are offered on white gold at 36mm, the platinum roster minus ice blue and its set version, and mother-of-pearl is one of the three colorless grounds on it that reach all four case metals and both sizes. Within that reach the marker arrangement is the limit: the all-baguette version exists everywhere the ground does, while the gold-framed alternative is confined to 36mm and disappears at the larger size. So this configuration pairs the arrangement the model carries universally with a bracelet it offers almost nowhere, since the diamond-set President appears on three references in the entire range, 128345RBR in Everose, 128348RBR in yellow gold and this one, all at 36mm, with platinum and the 40mm case excluded. Every dial on 128349RBR is available on either bracelet. Of those three references the white gold one is the least likely to be recognized for what it is. Everose and yellow both put a strong case color behind the stones and the contrast does the announcing; here the announcement never happens, and a fully set watch passes for a plain one at conversational distance. Whether that is the point or a waste depends entirely on the buyer, and it is the clearest single difference between the three.
This is the least demonstrative of the fully set Day-Dates, and that is the argument for choosing white gold to build one. In yellow or Everose a set bezel and a set bracelet read as brightness applied to a colored object, and the watch announces itself accordingly. Here the stones and the case sit close enough in value that the boundaries soften and the setting reads as an extension of the metal, so a specification that sounds maximal produces something closer to monochrome. The shell is what keeps it from being inert. It is the only element with any movement in it, and against so much fixed brightness that movement is more legible than it would be on a quieter watch. For a collector who wants everything set and does not want to be seen wanting it, this is the version that manages both. No other metal in the range lets a set watch stay quiet.
