A gradient dial gives this watch three rings instead of two. Reference 126284RBR is the 36mm Datejust in a combination of stainless steel and white gold with a diamond-set bezel, and this configuration carries a graduated green dial with applied baton markers, on the Oyster bracelet. Read from the outside in there is a ring of diamonds at the rim, then a band of dark green where the dial is deepest, then the lighter middle where the gradient opens up. Every other configuration on the reference has a bright edge and a flat field. This one has a transition between them, and the transition does more for the watch than the color does.

The movement is self-winding with a power reserve of approximately seventy hours, so the calendar survives a weekend off the wrist. A stop-seconds function allows the time to be set against a reference rather than approximately. The crown screws down and the bracelet closes flush against the case.
The Datejust arrived in 1945 as the first self-winding wristwatch to show the date in a window, and the 36mm case has been the model's central size ever since. Rolex registered the name for its steel and gold construction in 1933. The Oyster bracelet is older than the Datejust itself and was designed for a case built to keep water and dust out, which is why it still reads as construction rather than as ornament even under a rim of stones. Pairing it with a graduated dial produces an unusually layered watch from a very plain set of components: three flat links, two neutral metals, and a face that does all the work. Within the current 36mm range the white gold bezel appears fluted on 126234 and set with diamonds here, while the all-steel 126200 carries a smooth domed rim and no white gold anywhere. Graduated grounds are among the most recent additions to the model and have so far stayed with the colors rather than moving to the neutrals, which is the opposite of how new dial ideas usually travel through this range. The likely reason is practical rather than stylistic: a gradient needs a color to graduate through, and the neutrals have nowhere to go. A grey dial that darkens at the edge reads as a shadow or a flaw rather than as a deliberate treatment, which is why the effect has stayed with green and blue.
The buyer for this is choosing depth over brightness and structure over decoration. The gradient does something no amount of setting can, which is to give a small dial an interior, and the Oyster reinforces that by keeping everything below the case flat and quiet so the layering above it registers. It is also the configuration that photographs least accurately on the whole reference, since a camera at a fixed distance under fixed light flattens a gradient into an average and the middle band disappears entirely. Anyone judging it from images is judging something other than what arrives. Buyers come here from the flat greens having wanted the dial to do more, and from the gem-set dials having decided they wanted the interest inside the crystal rather than on top of it. A lacquered dial shows dust more readily than a metallic one, the gold is solid rather than plated, and the steel sits where the case gets handled.
