Every other dial here changes with the angle. This one also changes across itself. The ground runs light in the middle and darkens progressively toward the outer edge, so at any single moment the dial is holding several values at once. Add the sunray behavior every finished Rolex dial has and the face is varying along two axes rather than one, which is a genuinely different thing to look at and the reason this ground exists alongside the flat greens.
The gradient changes how the markers work. On a flat dial every applied baton sits against the same value, so all twelve behave identically as the wrist turns. Here the markers sit near the outer edge, in the darkest part of the ground, while the middle of the dial stays light. That gives the twelve white gold batons a consistently dark field to separate against no matter how bright the rest of the face becomes, which is why a graduated dial can be lighter overall than a flat one and still keep its markers legible. The hands, running from the middle outward, cross the full range of the gradient and change relationship with the ground along their own length. Correction runs through the winding crown at a dedicated position and leaves the hands where they are. The movement is self-winding with a power reserve of approximately seventy hours, so the calendar survives a weekend off the wrist and returns still correct. A stop-seconds function allows the watch to be set against a reference rather than approximately, which is the only other demand the movement makes of an owner. The crown screws down.
The Datejust arrived in 1945 as the first self-winding wristwatch to show the date in a window, and the 36mm case has been the model's central size ever since. Rolex registered the name for its steel and gold construction in 1933. Graduated dials are among the newest things the model carries and they arrived with green rather than with the older colors, which is unusual: most dial ideas in this range are introduced on a neutral and extended to the colors afterward. Within the current 36mm range the white gold bezel appears fluted on 126234 and set with diamonds here, while the all-steel 126200 carries a smooth domed rim. A gradient sits particularly well under a set rim because the darkest part of the dial is the part nearest the bezel, so the stones meet a dark field at their inner edge and separate cleanly, where a flat pale green would meet them at a similar value and blur into them. That is a design consequence rather than a coincidence, and it is visible the moment the two versions are put side by side. Green has also moved faster through this model than any color before it, going from a single seasonal dial to a permanent position across several references within a few years, and the graduated version is the one that has done most to keep it from feeling like a passing choice.
The buyer for this wants a dial with depth rather than a dial with a color. Green is the reason most people look at it and the gradient is the reason they buy it, since a flat green of the same shade is a considerably simpler object and reads as one after a few weeks. This face does not settle. It changes with the angle like every other dial and it changes across its own surface as well, which keeps it interesting long after the color has stopped being novel. The Jubilee is the dressier of the two bracelets and its alternating rows suit a dial that already refuses to hold one value. Buyers arrive here from the mint green having wanted more depth, and from the bright blue having wanted a color with somewhere to go. A lacquered dial shows dust more readily than a metallic one, and the bezel sits at the widest point of the case, where wear shows first.
