Black returns almost no light, so applied gold is read entirely on its own terms and needs neither relief nor tonal separation to be legible, and the dial stays sharp in conditions that would flatten silver or champagne. What that permits is a very clean layout: narrow numerals, no printed track, and a large field of unbroken black between them. The watch is legible at a distance where most dials on this reference require a second look. Around it the case places the gold in the fluted bezel alone, fluting never being cut into steel, so the numerals on the dial and the ring above are the only warm elements on a piece that is otherwise entirely steel. It would be reasonable to assume the manufacture decided once that warm cases take markers and cool cases take numerals, or the reverse, and applied it throughout. Neither is what happened. White and black were decided independently and arrived at opposite answers, and the rest of the range follows neither. There is no shortcut through this catalogue, only the per-ground check.
