The Rolex Datejust 278275 is a sophisticated blend of luxury and contemporary style, crafted from Everose gold. Its 31mm case is highlighted by a fluted Everose gold bezel, adding a refined touch to its iconic silhouette. The fluting began as a functional device for screwing the bezel down onto the case and is now cut and polished purely for the way it catches light. Introduced in 1945, the Datejust was the first self-winding wristwatch to show the date in a window on the dial, and in solid Everose gold it stands among the most formal expressions of the collection, with case, bezel and bracelet all worked from the same alloy. The standout white dial offers a clean and versatile aesthetic.

The date window at 3 o'clock, magnified by Rolex's signature Cyclops lens, ensures optimal legibility, while the President bracelet, first introduced on the 1956 Day-Date, enhances both elegance and comfort with its semi-circular three-piece links. Perfectly balancing functionality and luxurious design, the Datejust 278275 is a timeless statement piece for those who appreciate bold yet refined timepieces.

This is the only dial on the reference that says nothing about which reference it is. A white ground with Roman numerals is built on all seventeen Datejusts at this size, from the plain steel one through every two-metal case to all five solid gold ones, so the dial is common to the entire size and only the metal around it varies. A buyer who wants a dial that identifies the watch will have to choose something else, and on this reference that means choosing something the alloy decided. Everything else here is narrower: rose and chocolate belong to Everose, slate at this size belongs to Everose, and the shell and the silver reach widely but not universally, since the steel reference sets nothing at all and takes neither. Reference 278275 is the 31mm Datejust in Everose gold, carrying a fluted bezel, and this configuration pairs a plain white dial with a full set of Roman numerals, fitted to a President bracelet.

The case is solid Everose gold at thirty-one millimeters with the fluted bezel cut into the metal itself. The dial is a flat white holding one value at every angle, and Roman numerals in gold stand at the hours. This is the highest-contrast configuration the reference builds. White against Everose is a wider separation than anything else on the watch: the rose grounds match the case, slate declines to engage with it, the shell reports it and silver takes a cast from it, and only white sets a cool bright surface directly against warm metal with nothing in between. The numerals then reintroduce the gold inside the crystal, which is what stops the dial from reading as a foreign object dropped into the case, and a Roman numeral holds more metal in the same footprint than an applied baton would, so a full set carries a considerable amount of warm material on an otherwise cool face. The President bracelet is semi-circular three-piece links in the same gold, rounded across their width, and it is the only bracelet this reference offers. Rounded links throw light along their length rather than breaking it at each edge, so the bracelet reads as a continuous warm band, and the cool dial at the end of it is the only interruption in the whole object.

Hours, minutes, running seconds and a date changing in one step at midnight rather than easing into the following day. The self-winding movement in the 31mm case holds roughly fifty-five hours of running time, matching the 28mm references rather than the 36mm ones, which use a movement of their own. The date sits at three under a magnifying lens and takes a position that would otherwise carry a numeral, so the Roman set runs to ten characters rather than eleven. On a white ground the window is less disruptive than on any other dial the reference builds, since a white disc against a white ground is nearly continuous with it and only the frame marks the break; on the rose dials the same window is the brightest element on the face. Roman numerals identify their own positions rather than merely marking them, so the dial can be read from the characters without reference to the hands, and against a pale ground gold characters have enough separation for that to work in any light. This is the most legible watch the reference builds by a wide margin. Every other unset ground here is either matched to the case or set with stones that carry the reading, and a plain pale dial with full characters is the one configuration that does the job without asking anything of the light.

White carries no metal preference anywhere in the range. It appears at eight case sizes from 28mm to 44mm, on cases in steel, in all three two-metal combinations and in solid gold in every tone, which is more reach than any other ground the catalogue offers. At 31mm it comes with Roman numerals and nothing else, on every reference; at 36mm and 41mm the same ground gains an applied-marker version, so the choice that does not exist here exists one and two sizes up. Within this reference white is one of nine grounds across eleven configurations, and one of only four carrying no stones, the others being the two plain rose dials and the plain slate. It is also one of three grounds built on all three solid gold references at this size, alongside silver set with diamonds and the white shell; everything else on those rosters divides by case temperature. The reference is one of five solid gold Datejusts here, all President-only, and 278285RBR is the same case under a set rim. Between the two, a plain white dial in solid Everose exists in exactly two watches, since the bracelet is fixed and the ground comes one way at this size.

This is the plainest watch the reference builds and the one that gives the case the most to do. No stones, no color, no matched tone and no sunray sweep, just a white ground with gold characters on it inside a solid gold watch. For a buyer who wants a gold Datejust reading as formal rather than as decorated, it is the most direct answer on the reference, and the contrast makes it the easiest to read as well. Anyone who wants the dial to agree with the case should take one of the rose grounds. Anyone who wants a cool dial engaging the metal less directly should take the slate. And anyone who wants this exact dial with stones at the rim should take 278285RBR, which builds it under a set bezel and turns the plainest configuration on the roster into one of the more decorated watches at the size. That the same dial can do both is the argument for buying this pair of references on the rim rather than on the face.
