The Rolex Datejust 278275 is a sophisticated blend of luxury and contemporary style, crafted from Everose gold. Its 31mm case is highlighted by a fluted Everose gold bezel, adding a refined touch to its iconic silhouette. The fluting began as a functional device for screwing the bezel down onto the case and is now cut and polished purely for the way it catches light. Introduced in 1945, the Datejust was the first self-winding wristwatch to show the date in a window on the dial, and in solid Everose gold it stands among the most formal expressions of the collection, with case, bezel and bracelet all worked from the same alloy. The standout white mother-of-pearl dial features diamond hour markers, offering an iridescent and refined aesthetic.

The date window at 3 o'clock, magnified by Rolex's signature Cyclops lens, ensures optimal legibility, while the President bracelet, first introduced on the 1956 Day-Date, enhances both elegance and comfort with its semi-circular three-piece links. Perfectly balancing functionality and luxurious design, the Datejust 278275 is a timeless statement piece for those who appreciate bold yet refined timepieces.

One configuration on this reference cannot be made twice. Ten of the eleven dials built here are finished to a specification and repeat exactly, so that two examples of any of them are the same watch in every respect; the shell is cut from a material with its own structure, so the banding runs differently on every example and no two watches carrying it are quite the same object. Reference 278275 is the 31mm Datejust in Everose gold, carrying a fluted bezel, and this configuration pairs a white mother-of-pearl dial set with twelve diamonds in gold settings, with no numerals on it, and a President bracelet.

The case is solid Everose gold at thirty-one millimeters with the fluted bezel cut into the metal rather than fitted as a separate ring. The dial is a slice of white shell, thin enough to be translucent in places, laid over a base and finished flat. Nacre produces its color by refraction rather than by pigment, which means it takes a cast from whatever surrounds it, and here it is surrounded by rose gold on every side: the case, the rim, the mounts and the bracelet. Shell in an Everose case therefore reads pinker than the same dial does in yellow gold and considerably warmer than in steel or white gold, and there is nothing on the watch to pull it back. Twelve round diamonds sit at the hours in gold settings matched to the case. On a surface already returning light unevenly, the stones are the only fixed bright points on the dial, which is what keeps the ring legible against a ground that never holds still. The President bracelet is semi-circular three-piece links in the same gold, rounded across their width, and it is the only bracelet this reference offers, since no solid gold Datejust at this size is built with a Jubilee or an Oyster. Rounded links carry light along their length rather than breaking it at each edge, so the bracelet reads as one continuous warm band and the shifting dial at the end of it is the only unsettled surface on the watch.

Hours, minutes, running seconds and a date advancing in a single step at midnight. The self-winding movement in the 31mm case holds roughly fifty-five hours of running time, matching the 28mm references rather than the 36mm ones, which run a larger movement of their own rather than a scaled version of this one. Nothing further has been added, and the dial is read by position alone, since a diamond in a gold mount carries no information about which hour it stands at. On shell that matters more than on a printed ground. Nacre has visible structure of its own, bands and figuring running at whatever angle the material was cut, and that structure competes with any small marker placed on it; the twelve settings are bright enough and large enough to stay ahead of it where a printed index would not be. The date window at three is the one interruption in the ring, and against a shifting ground the disc is the only element on the dial that holds a constant value, which makes it more conspicuous here than its size suggests. The bands in a shell are also the size the shell made them, so a smaller dial shows fewer of them and each one occupies more of the face; at this diameter the figuring reads as a pattern rather than as a texture. Two examples set side by side will differ in where the bands fall and how much color moves through them, and neither is more correct than the other.

White mother-of-pearl is the most widely built ground in the range and it changes arrangement more often than any other. At 31mm it is a ring of twelve settings on sixteen references, every one of them identical, so the dial itself gives no indication of which watch it belongs to. At 28mm the same settings appear on thirteen references, with two others there taking gold markers at three, six and nine set with nine stones; at 34mm a version of that idea appears with twelve; at 36mm the name covers three separate dials and at 40mm a fourth built with baguette-cut stones. Within this reference the shell is one of nine grounds across eleven configurations, seven of them set, and it is one of only three grounds built on all three solid gold references at this size, alongside plain white and silver set with diamonds. Everything else on those rosters divides by case temperature, so the shell, the plain white and the silver are the three dials a buyer can compare directly across Everose, yellow and white gold at this size. Within this reference mother-of-pearl is one of four grounds offered only in set form, with aubergine, chocolate and silver, and it takes diamond hour markers in gold settings rather than the large Roman six that three grounds here carry.

This is the version for a buyer who wants the one element on the watch that was chosen rather than manufactured. Everything else here is fixed and repeatable: one metal, one rim, one bracelet, one setting arrangement shared across sixteen references. The shell is not, and in an Everose case it is also the warmest reading of the material the model offers, since every surface around it is contributing warmth. Anyone buying it should look at the actual example rather than a listing photograph, since the banding is the point and it will not match the picture. Anyone who wants the shell cooler should look at the same dial in a white gold or two-metal case. And anyone who wants the stones outside the crystal as well should take 278285RBR, which builds this identical dial under a rim set with diamonds, which is the only other way this ground can be had in solid Everose at this size, and which frames a changing surface with a fixed ring of stones rather than with cut metal.
