The only warm thing on this dial is a set of outlines. Reference 278241 is the 31mm Datejust in a combination of stainless steel and Everose gold with a plain domed bezel, and this configuration carries a white dial with Roman numerals and no stones anywhere on it, on the Oyster bracelet. Every other dial the reference offers puts gold on the face as a solid element, whether as applied markers, as settings holding stones, or as both. Roman numerals are not solid. They are open figures made of strokes, so the gold on this dial exists as line rather than as mass, and the white ground shows through the middle of every character. What that produces is a dial carrying a great deal of gold that does not look as though it carries much at all.
Roman numerals are open shapes, and that is the whole of the effect here. A baton marker is a filled bar and a gem setting is a filled ring, and both read as areas of metal sitting on the dial. A Roman numeral encloses the ground instead of covering it, so at any distance the eye reads white with gold drawn on it rather than gold placed on white. Rolex applies the numerals in solid Everose rather than printing them, which gives them height and edges and a real shadow, and at 31mm the sequence has to be drawn narrower than it would be on a wider case to keep the characters from touching one another. The white ground is an opaque lacquer laid in thin coats so it holds an even value across the curve of the dial, and it is the only ground on the reference that provides genuine contrast against Everose rather than sitting close to it. The bezel matters more than usual on this configuration. It is a smooth polished dome, and against a white dial it reads at a similar brightness, so the head of the watch resolves as one pale object with a warm outline running through the middle of it. Steel takes the case body and the outer bracelet links while Everose takes the bezel, the crown, the bracelet center rows, the numerals and the hands, all of it solid rather than plated. The Oyster bracelet is three broad flat links, brushed across the top with polished flanks, closing on a concealed clasp.
The watch does one thing beyond telling the time, and it is the reason the model has a name. The date changes instantaneously at midnight rather than creeping through the hours around it, which is what the Datejust introduced in 1945. Its disc is white to match the dial, and this is the one ground on the reference where the printed numeral in the window carries about the same contrast as everything else on the face rather than standing out as the only dark mark on it. That is a quieter result than it sounds. On a matched or a dark dial the date is where the eye goes first, and here it simply takes its place in the sequence. The frame around the aperture is drawn for a 31mm dial rather than reduced from a wider one, so it does not press against the numerals at its shoulders, and the Cyclops lens above it, fitted to the model since 1953, enlarges the numeral roughly two and a half times. Correction runs through the winding crown at a dedicated position and leaves the hands where they are. The movement is self-winding with a power reserve of approximately 55 hours, built for a case this narrow rather than carried down from a wider one, since a smaller barrel stores less energy and a lighter rotor takes in less of it from the same arm. The crown screws down against the case and the bracelet folds shut on itself.
The Datejust has been in production since 1945, when it became the first self-winding wristwatch to show the date through a window on the dial. The 31mm case sits between the 28mm Lady-Datejust and the 36mm original, and the 278000 generation replaced the 178000 series in 2018 with a revised case and bracelet. Rolex registered the name for its steel and gold construction in 1933, on the reasoning that steel supplies the structure and gold supplies everything the eye takes in. A white dial with Roman numerals is the oldest surviving idea in the model and the one that has changed least across its whole history, which is why it tends to be used as the reference point when the other dials are being described. Everose is far newer, introduced in 2005, and most of what has been built around the alloy since has been warm. Putting the oldest dial on the newest metal is an odd pairing on paper and a common one in practice. Within the generation, 278241 is the steel and Everose reference with a plain domed bezel, and this is the plainest configuration it offers, with no stones on the case, none on the bracelet, none on the dial, and a marker set that has been in the catalogue far longer than the alloy holding it.
The buyer for this wants a Datejust rather than a particular Datejust, and that is not a criticism of the choice. This is the configuration people describe when they describe the model, and specifying it deliberately after seeing the alternatives is a different thing from arriving at it by default. What Everose does to it is subtler than a photograph shows. Yellow gold on a white dial is a hard, bright pairing, and rose gold against the same ground is softer and slightly less formal, which makes this version easier to wear with ordinary clothes than the yellow equivalent. The Oyster bracelet pushes further in that direction, three broad planes built for daily wear rather than for occasions. There are no stones on it anywhere. Buyers usually arrive here after looking at the warmer dials and deciding they read as jewelry, and a smaller group arrives from steel having decided they wanted some gold but not a watch that announces it. Both tend to keep it a long time.
