Introduced in 2017, the RM 11-03 arrived as the successor to Richard Mille's legendary RM 011 — the Felipe Massa collaboration that had defined the brand since 2007 and established its signature design language. The 11-03 evolved the platform with the new automatic Caliber RMAC3, engineered to bring the movement's complexity to the fore through a three-dimensional visual character. Glossy bevelled rims marked with intermediate times surround the coloured counters, contrasted against a satin-brushed grade-5 titanium upper bridge and a PVD-treated lower bridge that visually maps the movement's architecture. The variable-geometry rotor in grade-5 titanium — inspired by aerodynamic appendages seen in Formula 1 — completes a design that firmly ties the reference to the brand's motorsport heritage.

The 50 x 42.7mm tonneau case in grade-5 titanium measures 13.85mm thick, featuring brushed and polished surfaces alongside sapphire crystal and exhibition caseback. The skeletonized dial reveals the movement with an oversized date at twelve, annual calendar month indicator at four-thirty, 12-hour totalizer at three, 60-minute countdown timer at nine, and small seconds at six. The automatic Caliber RMAC3 — a flyback chronograph built on a grade-5 titanium baseplate with twin parallel barrels and free-sprung variable-inertia balance — delivers a 55-hour power reserve, completed by a rubber strap with titanium folding clasp.

The RM 11-03 is, in the precise sense of the term, the RM 011's successor rather than its replacement. A fixture of the Richard Mille collection since 2007, the RM 011 retired at the height of its glory to make way for the RM 11-03 Automatic Flyback Chronograph. The distinction between successor and replacement matters here because the RM 011's position — described in this collection across the titanium, rose gold, and white gold configurations — was the reference that established Richard Mille's annual calendar flyback chronograph as a distinct category of haute horlogerie rather than simply a technically ambitious watch. The RM 11-03's brief was not to displace the RM 011's achievements but to advance them: to take the same complication architecture (flyback chronograph, annual calendar, skeletonized automatic movement) and rebuild it with a new caliber whose visual and technical resolution exceeds the RMAC1's. The guiding principle for Richard Mille behind the RM 11-03 was to imbue the new automatic RMAC3 calibre with a 3D quality and to bring its complexity visually to the fore. The phrase "3D quality" is not marketing language but a design directive: the RMAC3's architecture produces a dial-side visual field whose depth and visual complexity exceed the RMAC1's through the specific engineering choices that the new caliber made.

The glossy bevelled rims marked with intermediate times surrounding the coloured counters of the flyback chronograph and seconds window confer depth. This sense of volume is further accentuated by an upper bridge in satin-brushed grade 5 titanium that contrasts with the movement, also crafted from titanium but with a PVD coating. The contrast between the satin-brushed upper bridge and the PVD-coated movement beneath it is the specific visual device that produces the "3D quality" the design directive specified: two titanium surfaces at different finishing stages — one satin-brushed and warm grey, one PVD-treated and darker — occupying different apparent visual depths in the same dial field, the lighter surface appearing to float above the darker one. Against this two-depth movement field, the glossy bevelled rims surrounding the chronograph counters and the seconds window provide a third visual depth: the polished bevels reflecting light at maximum intensity from their angled surfaces, the polish standing forward of both the satin bridge and the PVD movement in the visual hierarchy that the three finishing types collectively produce. The coloured counter inserts — the specific yellow or orange accent colors that appear in the chronograph counter and seconds window positions across different RM 11-03 configurations — are the chromatic elements that orient the viewer within the dial's depth architecture, each counter's color providing the immediate focal point from which the surrounding grey and dark grey movement architecture is read as context.

The Calibre RMAC3 is the movement whose full complication specification the RM 11-03 deploys: an automatic flyback chronograph with a 12-hour totaliser, 60-minute countdown timer at 9 o'clock, oversized date, month display, and UTC function, built on a skeletonized grade 5 titanium baseplate and bridges. The annual calendar's automatic adjustment for months of 30 and 31 days — the standard annual calendar's eleven-month automatic function requiring a single manual correction only at the February-to-March transition — distinguishes the RM 11-03's calendar from a simple date display in the practical manner described in other annual calendar references in this collection. The oversized date at twelve o'clock and the month indicator between four and five o'clock provide the calendar's primary displays. The movement has two barrels, mounted side by side, to ensure stable coupling while providing a power reserve of around 55 hours. The 4Hz free sprung balance is highly resistant to shocks and can be tuned more precisely than a traditional balance wheel.

The variable-geometry rotor is the RMAC3's winding architecture and the one whose Formula 1 inspiration is most directly stated: the modern lines of the variable-geometry rotor in grade 5 titanium are inspired by the aerodynamic appendages seen in Formula 1. This technical solution, a Richard Mille exclusive, makes it possible to adjust automatic winding of the watch to the wearer's activity level by varying the inertia of the rotor thanks to two microblasted and chamfered wings in 18K white gold. Offering six possible positions, the grade 5 satin-brushed and PVD-treated titanium rotor is mounted on ceramic ball bearings. The six-position adjustment requires watchmaker intervention for each position change — the wings' positions are not self-adjusting in real time but set by the watchmaker to the configuration appropriate to the wearer's typical activity level, the positions ranging from minimum inertia (for very active wearers whose wrist movement is frequent and vigorous) to maximum inertia (for less active wearers whose wrist movement is slower and less frequent). The ceramic ball bearings reduce rotor friction to the practical minimum, the ceramic's hardness and smoothness providing lower rolling resistance than steel bearings at equivalent precision.

Chamfering and buffing the surfaces is entirely performed by hand, and the case is held together by 20 grade 5 titanium spline screws. The titanium case at 49.94 by 44.50 millimeters and 16.15 millimeters in height carries the RM 11-03's characteristic tonneau case architecture in the grade 5 titanium material whose 40-percent-lower-density-than-steel specification makes the watch substantially lighter than its dimensional profile would suggest in a steel or gold case of equivalent volume. The sapphire crystals on both the dial side and the caseback provide the exhibition views — the dial-side crystal revealing the RMAC3's three-depth visual architecture, the caseback crystal revealing the lower bridge and the variable-geometry rotor's ceramic-bearing-mounted oscillation. The rubber strap with deployant buckle completes the watch in the strap format appropriate to the RM 11-03's active wearing context.

The RM 11-03 titanium's collector position is as the accessible entry point to the current-generation Richard Mille annual calendar flyback chronograph — "accessible" in the Richard Mille sense, which is specific to a brand whose entry-level configurations occupy a price category that is, in the broader watch market, the summit. Within the RM 11-03 family's material hierarchy — titanium, red gold, white gold, Carbon TPT, Quartz TPT, and various limited edition materials — the titanium provides the complication architecture and the RMAC3's full technical specification at the minimum case material weight and the minimum case material preciousness, the watch at its most instrumental and least decorative.
