Speak with a specialist about this piece:

When Richard Mille turned its attention to women, it refused to simply shrink a men's watch, and the RM 007 became the maison's first automatic creation conceived expressly for the female wrist. It carries the brand's unmistakable tonneau architecture and technical bravado, yet channels them toward unabashed glamour rather than motorsport. This gem-set example pushes that idea to its most exuberant, transforming a serious mechanical object into a piece of wearable high jewelry that only Richard Mille could conceive.

The curved, 45mm x 31mm, tonneau case is rendered in rose gold and lavished with orange and yellow sapphires graduating across its surface, punctuated by signature spline screws. Within, a sunray motif fans outward in mother-of-pearl and vivid gem-set rays, framed by diamond hour markers on a translucent flange. Slender hands sweep above the openworked movement, a date window rests at six o'clock, and a crisp white rubber strap grounds the riot of color.

When Richard Mille decided to make its first watch for women, it faced a genuine problem. This was a brand built entirely on the language of the racing machine, on aerospace alloys and extreme shock resistance and skeletonized movements that looked like the exposed workings of a Formula One car, a brand whose whole identity was technical, muscular, and uncompromising. How does a house like that make a watch for a woman? The easy answers, shrinking a men's model or abandoning the engineering for something soft and pretty, would both have been failures, the first patronizing and the second a betrayal of everything the brand stood for. The RM 007 was Richard Mille's answer, its first women's watch, and the answer it gave was the interesting one: keep the technical DNA entirely intact, and marry it to genuine high jewelry. This watch is that fusion made real, an object that is at once a serious piece of Richard Mille engineering and a lavish, colorful jewel, and the tension between those two things is exactly what makes it work.

The jewelry is the first thing you see, and it is anything but timid. The curved tonneau case, that signature barrel shape, is set all over with colored sapphires in warm sunset tones, oranges and yellows graduating across the surface so that the whole case glows like a warm ember, a gradient of fire wrapping the wrist. This is not the cool white sparkle of diamonds but something richer and more playful, a celebration of color, and setting stones this way into the complex curved surfaces and the bridges of a Richard Mille case is a genuinely difficult feat of gem-setting, each stone placed by hand into a three-dimensional form far harder to work than a flat bezel. The result is warm, vivid, and joyful, a Richard Mille that has traded its usual industrial monochrome for the colors of a sunrise.

The dial carries that idea to its fullest, and it is a rare thing for Richard Mille: a decorative, artistic dial. From the center radiates a sunburst, rays of rose gold and white fanning outward like the beams of a rising sun, the warm rays picked out with orange sapphires so that the whole face seems to glow and radiate light from its heart. It is a genuinely pretty, expressive design, a world away from the severe technical dials of the brand's men's watches, and it gives the RM 007 a warmth and a sense of joy that is entirely its own. Diamonds mark the hours around the edge, small bright points encircling the radiant sunburst, and a date display sits low on the dial, tucked into the design. This is Richard Mille allowing itself to be beautiful in a frankly decorative way, to make a dial that is a small work of jewelry art rather than a readout of engineering, and it is all the more charming for the surprise of it.

And yet, crucially, the engineering is all still there, which is what keeps the watch honest and makes it a true Richard Mille rather than merely a gem-set trinket. Look past the sunburst and you see that the movement is skeletonized and exposed in the RM way, its mechanism visible around and behind the decorative center, the transparent-machine philosophy intact. The case is the genuine Richard Mille tonneau, contoured in three dimensions to hug the wrist, held together by the brand's trademark ring of spline screws set around the bezel, the same construction that defines every watch the house makes. The movement is automatic, self-winding from the motion of the wrist in the efficient way Richard Mille has made its own, so the watch runs faithfully as it is worn. And for all its gold and gems, it retains the surprising lightness and the comfortable, wrist-hugging fit that are hallmarks of the brand, a watch meant to be genuinely worn and lived in rather than kept for special occasions. Nothing about the technical substance has been diluted; the jewelry has simply been laid over a real Richard Mille.

That refusal to compromise the engineering is the whole point, and it is what separates the RM 007 from the countless jewelry watches that are pretty on the outside and ordinary within. Here the woman who wears it gets both at once: the warmth and beauty and color of genuine high jewelry, the graduated sapphires and the radiant sunburst dial, and underneath it the real thing, a skeletonized automatic movement in a screwed-together tonneau case, the same obsessive construction that goes into the watches worn by the brand's champion athletes. It is jewelry that does not condescend, beauty that sits on top of real substance, and that is a rare and satisfying combination.

Rendered in rose gold, warm and pink, the whole watch settles into a single glowing register, the pink gold and the orange and yellow sapphires and the radiant dial all playing in the same warm, sunlit palette, joyful and rich and unmistakably feminine. It is a world away from the black carbon and grey titanium of the brand's technical pieces, and deliberately so, because this was Richard Mille learning to speak a new language, the language of jewelry and warmth and color, without forgetting the one it already knew.

That is what makes the RM 007 such a significant and such a lovely object. It was the watch with which Richard Mille first turned to women, and it answered the challenge not by softening its identity but by fusing it with high jewelry, keeping the skeletonized automatic movement and the screwed-together tonneau intact while wrapping them in graduated sapphires and crowning them with a radiant sunburst dial. It is engineering and ornament at once, a racing machine's heart beating beneath a jewel's surface, warm and colorful and joyful on the wrist, and it proved that the boldest technical brand in watchmaking could make something genuinely beautiful for a woman without pretending to be anything other than itself.
