Speak with a specialist about this piece:

The RM 004 occupies foundational status within Richard Mille's chronograph catalog — introduced in 2005 following five years of research and development, representing the manufacture's mastery of the split-seconds (rattrapante) chronograph, one of the most complex traditional complications in watchmaking. Its column-wheel construction with improved split-seconds mechanism virtually eliminated the unpredictable jumping of the seconds hand that afflicted other split-seconds chronographs. The "Asia Edition" configuration in Carbon TPT with 18-karat rose gold accents represents one of the rarest RM 004 executions ever produced — limited to just fifteen pieces created exclusively for the Asian market, placing it among Richard Mille's most exclusive and geographically restricted references.

The 42mm x 50mm tonneau case in Carbon TPT — the brand's layered carbon nanofiber composite with distinctive striated appearance — measures 16.5mm thick and features polished 18-karat rose gold pushpieces and crown accents alongside sapphire crystal front and exhibition caseback. The fully skeletonized dial reveals the movement architecture with rose gold-tone Arabic numerals, two chronograph subdials, power reserve indicator, torque indicator, function indicator, and inner rose gold tachymeter bezel. The hand-wound Caliber RM 004-V3 — a split-seconds chronograph with 30-minute totalizer built on a grade-5 titanium baseplate — delivers approximately 70 hours of power reserve, completed by a black rubber strap.

*This watch is a limited edition of 15 pieces.

The RM 004 is the Richard Mille reference whose development preceded the manufacture's commercial production and whose technical ambition established the standard against which all subsequent Richard Mille chronograph movements have been measured: originally released in 2004 after five years of development, the RM 004 introduced to the market a split-seconds chronograph whose column-wheel architecture and specific rattrapante mechanism addressed the most persistent quality problem in split-seconds chronograph design. The column-wheel chronograph boasts an improved split-seconds mechanism that virtually eliminates the unpredictable jumping of the seconds hand afflicting many split-seconds chronographs. The hand-jump problem in conventional rattrapante designs occurs at the moment of split-seconds engagement and disengagement: when the split hand is released to catch the main chronograph hand, the mechanical shock of the two hands meeting at slightly different speeds produces the visible jump whose unpredictability undermines the precision timing that the split-seconds function is designed to provide. The RM 004's solution — whose specific mechanism Richard Mille developed across the five-year period preceding the watch's introduction — reduces this shock to the point where the hands' reunion is smooth rather than visible, the split-seconds function operating as its design intent requires. The Asia Edition of the V3 variant, limited to 15 pieces, is the most restricted production configuration of this movement in the Carbon TPT material.

The RM 004-V3 has a carbon nanofiber tonneau-shaped case that is 42 × 50mm in surface, 16.5mm thick with a sapphire crystal and an exhibition caseback. The Carbon TPT case material — produced through NTPT's proprietary process of stacking and compressing carbon fiber layers at 45-degree rotation increments, the resulting material cut by CNC to reveal the specific damascene pattern of the rotated fiber layers at the cut surface — is the case material whose specific dark, striated visual character provides the high-contrast background against which the rose gold accents read at maximum chromatic intensity. The rose gold crown and pushers at the case's operating hardware positions, the rose gold Arabic numeral finishing on the skeletonized dial, and the inner rose gold tachymeter bezel together constitute the warm precious metal program whose four distribution points across the case, dial, and bezel perimeter — crown hardware, numeral finishing, bezel ring, and movement finishing — are the rose gold's specific contribution to a composition whose dominant material is the Carbon TPT's cool, dark, striated field.

The dial is skeletonized with Arabic numerals that have rose gold finishing, two small subdials, a power reserve indicator, a torque indicator, a function indicator, and an inner rose gold tachymeter bezel. The split-seconds chronograph's complication display occupies the skeletonized dial's available surface across the various indicator positions: the two small subdials providing the elapsed chronograph register and running seconds, the power reserve indicator tracking the 70-hour reserve's current state, the torque indicator whose specific function in a Richard Mille movement is the display of the mainspring's current torque delivery (high torque at full wind, declining toward exhaustion), and the function indicator identifying the movement's operational state. The torque indicator is the display whose specific presence most directly reflects Richard Mille's engineering philosophy: in most watchmaking contexts, the torque available from the mainspring is considered a mechanical fact rather than an information display — it is present and available but not shown to the wearer. The torque indicator's presence in the RM 004's display architecture reflects the manufacture's position that the movement's operational state should be as transparent to the wearer as possible, the watch displaying its own mechanical condition in the same spirit that a racing car's dashboard displays the parameters of its engine's operation.

The red accents visible on the subdials and power reserve indicator are the chromatic signature that distinguishes the Asia Edition's specific dial program from the standard RM 004-V3 configurations: the red applied to the indicator scales and the subdial markings providing the one fully saturated chromatic element in a composition whose other elements are the Carbon TPT's dark grey-black and the rose gold's warm pinkish-amber. Against both backgrounds, the red's warmth and saturation provide immediate visual differentiation: against the Carbon TPT's dark absorption, the red reads at full warm chromatic intensity; against the rose gold's own warm tone, the red provides the chromatic acceleration that prevents the warm program from reading as tonally undifferentiated.

The Calibre RM 004-V3 is the hand-wound movement whose manual winding specification is consistent with Richard Mille's position that a chronograph of this complication level is properly wound by hand rather than by automatic rotor — the hand-winding interaction providing the direct engagement with the movement's energy storage that the attentive owner provides. The movement delivers 70 hours of power reserve. The exhibition caseback, its sapphire crystal revealing the movement's skeletonized architecture from the reverse, allows the baseplate and bridges — in the lightweight alloys and materials specific to RM 004-V3's movement construction — to be observed in the view from the wrist.

Completing this tool watch is an orange strap and rose gold highlights. The orange rubber strap provides the third warm chromatic element in the watch's composition — orange being warm, adjacent to the red subdial accents on the warm spectrum and more saturated in warmth than the rose gold's own pinkish tone — whose presence at the wrist completes the color program that the red subdial accents begin at the dial and the rose gold hardware continues at the case. The strap's specific orange, against the Carbon TPT case's dark absorption, is the composition's most vivid chromatic statement at the point of direct wrist contact.

The 15-piece production is the number whose implications for the collector market are direct: across Richard Mille's full production history, the most restricted allocation editions have consistently produced the most significant secondary market documentation. The Asia Edition designation — the specific geographic market allocation that Richard Mille applied to the 15-piece RM 004-V3 in Carbon TPT with rose gold accents — is the collector identification that connects this specific configuration to the company's specific commercial relationship with the Asian collector market at the time of the watch's production, and whose 15-piece production now constitutes the full documentary record of this specific material and complication combination.
