The Celestial is the only wristwatch Patek Philippe makes where the display is not a reading of time but a picture of the sky, and this is the version with a sapphire-set bezel. A rotating sky chart shows the night sky as it appears from a fixed latitude, with an ellipse marking the portion currently visible, a meridian line, the angular motion of the Moon and the moment Sirius and the Moon cross the meridian. None of that is information a wearer needs. All of it is information that is true, continuously, without being consulted, which is the argument the reference makes for itself. The case is platinum at 44 mm and the watch runs in the collection until 2028. It has been catalogued since 2014 without redesign, which is a long run for a jewelled interpretation of anything and suggests the sapphire pairing was correct from the outset rather than arrived at through revision.
The case measures 44 mm across and 11.33 mm thick, and the size is not stylistic. A sky chart has to carry a legible representation of a hemisphere, and there is a diameter below which the constellations cannot be rendered at all, so the Celestial is large because the display requires it rather than because the movement does. The bezel is set with sapphires, and blue stone against a blue sky chart is the tonal pairing rather than the contrasting one, so the setting reads as a continuation of the dial and the watch holds a single cold register from centre to edge. The case back is sapphire crystal. White gold skeletonized leaf-shaped hands cross the display, and the skeletonizing is functional rather than decorative, since solid hands passing over a sky chart would conceal parts of it every time they crossed and open ones let the chart show through. The watch is worn on an alligator strap. The two discs above the dial are sapphire crystal rather than metal, which is what makes the display possible at all. A metal disc carrying a star chart would have to be pierced or printed and would block the dial beneath it, while a transparent disc allows two independent charts to rotate over one another and over the fixed elements of the dial without any of the three obscuring the others.
What the dial actually does is unusual enough to be worth stating plainly. The elegance is that a single set of gearing produces the sky chart, the lunar position and the phase display together, which is a considerably harder arrangement to arrive at than driving three indications independently. Sidereal time is the detail that separates this from every other astronomical display. A solar day and a sidereal day differ by roughly four minutes, which sounds trivial and accumulates to a full day across a year, so a sky chart driven from ordinary timekeeping would be visibly wrong within weeks. Driving the chart on its own rate is the reason the display stays true.
Two Celestial references appear in the current selection and they differ in one respect only. This one carries a sapphire bezel and the 6104/12P-010 carries rubies, with everything else, the platinum case, the 44 mm diameter, the blue dial and the complication set, held constant. That makes them a controlled pair in the same way the coloured stone groups elsewhere in the collection are, and the choice between them is a choice about whether the setting should agree with the dial or argue with it. Both entered the catalogue in 2014 and both run to 2028, which is the longest continuous window of any reference in the current grand complication group, and unusual in a collection where the jewelled versions normally exit first. It is also the only complication in the group that cannot be observed working. A chronograph is used and a calendar advances visibly, while the chart moves too slowly for the eye and is verified only by looking at it again days later. That slowness is the character of the reference rather than a limitation of it.
The Celestial attracts a collector who is not buying a complication so much as an idea, and the idea is that a watch can hold a correct account of something far larger than a day. Nobody needs to know when Sirius crosses the meridian. The appeal is that the watch knows, continuously and without being asked, and a certain kind of buyer finds that more compelling than any calendar or chronograph. The sapphire bezel suits that reading better than the ruby alternative does, because blue on blue keeps the watch contemplative where red makes it declarative, and buyers who respond to the Celestial at all tend to want it quiet. At 44 mm it is a large watch and there is no smaller version, so the decision is partly settled by the wrist. The reference leaves the catalogue in 2028. Anyone considering it should also accept that it will rarely be understood by anyone else on sight, which for most buyers of this watch is part of the appeal rather than a drawback. A watch that requires explanation is a different proposition from one that does not, and the Celestial has never attempted to be the second kind.
