This is the smallest chiming watch Patek Philippe currently catalogues and the only repeater in the collection built at 36 mm. Size is the whole difficulty. A repeating mechanism needs room for its racks, its hammers and its gongs, and every millimetre removed from the case makes the acoustics harder rather than easier, since a smaller case holds less air and offers shorter gongs to work with. That the reference sounds properly at this diameter is the achievement, and it is the reason the watch exists at a size the rest of the chiming collection does not attempt. The case is white gold with a diamond-set bezel, and the reference leaves the collection in 2028. There is also no second version of it in a larger case, which is worth stating because it means the size is the design rather than an option within it. Patek Philippe did not scale an existing repeater down. The reference was conceived at this diameter and everything in it follows from that.
The case measures 36 mm across and 10.14 mm thick, and the bezel is set with diamonds, which is unusual on a chiming watch for practical reasons as much as aesthetic ones. Anything added to the case of a repeater has the potential to damp it, so a set bezel on a watch that has to sound is a decision taken with the acoustics in mind rather than in spite of them. The dial is engine turned by hand in a swirling pattern and covered with Grand Feu enamel in translucent blue, the construction known as flinque, so light travels through the colour, reaches the machined surface beneath and comes back changed. Transfer-printed hour markers in a white-gilt powder sit on that surface rather than applied numerals, which keeps the dial flatter and leaves more of the guilloche visible than an applied treatment would. White gold faceted spear-shaped hands cross it. The watch is supplied with interchangeable solid and sapphire crystal backs and worn on an alligator strap. Printed markers rather than applied ones also change how the dial is built. An applied marker is fixed through the dial and every fixing is a hole through the enamel and the engine turning beneath it, while a transfer-printed marker sits on the surface and pierces nothing, so the guilloche runs unbroken from edge to centre in a way an applied treatment would not allow.
The complication is a minute repeater sounding hours, quarters and minutes on demand across two classic gongs, with small seconds as the only additional indication. Classic gongs rather than cathedral ones is the correct choice at this diameter and not a compromise, since a cathedral gong requires a longer run around the case than 36 mm can provide and forcing one into a small case produces a worse result than a well-tuned standard pair. The mechanism is assembled and finished by a small number of watchmakers and regulated at the end by listening, because the qualities that decide whether a repeater is good are tonal rather than dimensional and cannot be measured off a drawing. Beyond the slide in the case band and the crown the watch offers nothing to operate, no date, no calendar and no second display, which on a case this size is the only sensible arrangement. The slide that triggers the strike is set into the case band and is the only control beyond the crown, so the complication is summoned deliberately rather than displayed continuously. That is the standing character of a repeater and it separates the complication from every other one the Manufacture builds, since a calendar or a chronograph is visible whether or not the wearer wants it while a chiming train is entirely silent until asked.
Two repeaters in the current selection share this dial construction, this reference and the 5178G-012, and reading them together is the clearest way to understand what the size decision costs and buys. The 5178 is 40 mm in white gold with applied Breguet numerals, a plain bezel and cathedral gongs. This one is 36 mm with a set bezel, printed markers and classic gongs. Same visual idea, two different voices and two different wrists. Above both sit the 5374G-001 and the 5374/400P-001, which add a perpetual calendar to cathedral gongs in 42 mm cases and are far more complicated watches as a result. Across the whole chiming group the interchangeable case backs are common to every reference. Those backs also mean this watch can be presented closed or open depending on the occasion, which on a reference aimed at a dress context is a more useful option than it would be on a sports piece.
