The Tourbillon Souverain was the watch F.P. Journe launched the brand with in 1999, and it was never produced with a gold movement during its 1999 to 2003 run. This example comes from the 38 mm Steel Set of 2015, thirty-eight sets of five watches, in which it carries a rose gold movement in a steel case. See the F.P. The steel case measures 38 mm and stands 9.9 mm deep, on a leather strap. The dial is gold with a bronze patina worked against whitened guilloché silver, and the hands are blued steel.

The Tourbillon Souverain was the first watch F.P. Journe sold under his own name, launched in 1999 and offered by subscription to twenty buyers. It was made until 2003 and never carried a gold movement in that time: F.P. Journe moved from rhodium-coated brass to 18K rose gold in 2004, the year after this reference ended. The 38 mm Steel Set is therefore the only configuration in which a gold-movement Tourbillon Souverain exists.

The steel case measures 38 mm across and 9.9 mm deep, on a leather strap. The dial is gold given a bronze patina and worked against whitened guilloché silver, and the hands are blued steel. The patinated dial is specific to the set.

The watch is a tourbillon with hours, minutes and a power reserve indication. The 2004 generation of the Tourbillon Souverain added deadbeat seconds, stepping the seconds hand once per second; the earlier reference in this set predates that change.

F.P. Journe released the 38 mm Steel Set in 2015 to close out the 38 mm case. Thirty-eight sets were made, each holding a Tourbillon Souverain, a Chronomètre à Résonance, an Octa Automatique, an Octa Calendrier and a Chronomètre Souverain, all in steel with rose gold movements. After 2015 the catalogue moved to 40 mm and 42 mm.

Of the five watches in the set this is the one whose configuration exists nowhere else, because the Tourbillon Souverain and the gold movement never overlapped in production, and since sets are broken up the set documentation forms part of the identification.
