A world timer in a gold case is a slightly contrary object, and that is most of what makes this one interesting. The Octa UTC exists to be read in unfamiliar places, and 18K 6N gold is not the metal anybody chooses for a watch they intend to travel hard with. F.P. Journe built it anyway, at 38 mm and 40 mm, with a dial of white gold and whitened guilloche silver and the world map laser engraved and painted onto a sapphire disc at 7:30. Off-center hours and minutes, small seconds at 4:30, a large date, the power reserve at 9, and a winter and summer hour indicator. The Classique UTC ran from 2011 to 2018. It has not been made since, and nothing in the current catalog carries a map of any kind.
The map is worth looking at as cartography rather than as decoration. What is engraved onto the disc is a projection of the whole earth divided into twenty-four segments, one for each hour of rotation, and the continents are drawn across those divisions rather than fitted inside them. That means the boundaries falling through landmasses are visible, which is honest: time zones do cut through continents, and a display that hid the fact would be prettier and less useful. The engraving is done by laser because the level of coastline detail needed at this diameter cannot be cut by hand or by a rotating tool, and the paint is laid into the engraved lines rather than onto the surface, so the map sits within the sapphire instead of on top of it. Read the disc against the fixed ring around it and you have the time in any zone you can locate. Read it as a picture and you have the only genuinely representational image F.P. Journe has ever put on a production dial. Everything else in the catalog is geometry, engine turning and applied metal, and the manufacture has never gone near figurative work anywhere else. That makes the map an outlier twice over, both within this model and within the whole body of work.
The calibre is the 1300.3 in 18K rose gold and what it is doing here is carrying more than it was designed for. The base movement is the Octa automatic: 30.80 mm across, 5.80 mm high, unidirectional automatic winding, 21,600 alternations per hour, a single barrel holding a mainspring about a meter long and delivering around 160 hours. Onto that base the UTC stacks a rotating earth disc, a twenty-four hour zone reading, a large date, a power reserve indication and a seasonal hour correction, which is more separate functions than any other Octa carries. The base itself is left entirely untouched by any of it. Every one of those indications is driven from a module above the going train rather than from a redrawn movement, which is the arrangement F.P. Journe established with the Lune in 2004 and used for the whole family thereafter. The consequence is that the most complicated Octa and the plainest share a barrel, an escapement and a balance, and differ only in what has been built on top of them. A buyer choosing the UTC over a Reserve de Marche is not choosing a better movement, and would not want one: the point of the platform is that the movement is already as good as the manufacture intends to make it.
There is a real distinction between a second time zone watch and a world timer, and the UTC belongs firmly to the second category. A dual time watch shows you the hour somewhere else, usually one place, usually chosen when the watch is set, and it answers the question of what time it is at home. A world timer shows every zone at once and answers a different question, which is what time it is anywhere, including places the wearer has no particular relationship with. The first is a practical instrument built for one specific journey and set accordingly. The second is closer to a statement about how the wearer thinks about the world, which is a large part of why world timers have always been slightly romantic objects, and why remarkably few of them are ever actually worn abroad. The Octa UTC sits squarely in that tradition and then adds the seasonal correction, which is the one concession to actual practice that most world timers never bother to make, and it is a meaningful one. It is the most useful romantic watch in the catalog, and probably the only one where the practical case and the sentimental one point in the same direction.
A gold case on a travel watch will have seen more contact than a dress Octa, so start there. Look at the 6N gold along the bezel and lug flanks for polishing that has softened the edges, and remember that a gold case can be worked more times than a platinum one before it fails but shows each pass more clearly. On the dial, examine the sapphire disc from several angles for rim chipping and for gaps in the painted continents, which is the failure that matters here and is not repairable. Rotate the earth through a complete turn with the adjuster and confirm it holds its position rather than creeping back. Work the winter and summer indicator through both of its settings, since it is the least used function on the watch and therefore the one most likely to have stiffened. Ask about service history, because the module is not something a general watchmaker should be opening. Then check that the large date throws both of its discs together at midnight, and let the reserve at 9 travel its full scale over the course of several days.
