This is the standard-production Octa Chronographe in its warmest dial and coolest case, and it is the version most people picture when the reference comes up. The plate is 18K 5N gold. The three subdials are whitened guilloche silver. The case is platinum, offered at 38 mm and at 40 mm, and the movement inside is the automatic calibre 1300.3 with plates of solid 18K rose gold. The complication is a flyback chronograph with a sixty-minute counter, and there is a large date as well. F.P. Journe built the reference from 2004 to 2008 and then withdrew it, which is four years, and he has never made a direct replacement for it. Among his three chronographs this is the one that behaves most like an ordinary watch, and that is very much meant as a recommendation rather than as a criticism.
Warm plate, cool counters, cold case: the dial works by putting those three in a fixed relationship and never varying it. The 5N gold ground is the warmest thing on the watch. The subdials sit on it in whitened guilloche silver, each one cut separately and screwed down with a steel circle, so they are raised very slightly above the plate rather than printed onto it. Those steel circles matter a good deal more than they appear to at first glance. They ring each counter in a hard bright line, which sharpens the boundary between the timing displays and the running time, and they echo the platinum of the case so the watch reads as a single object. The engine turning inside each subdial supplies a texture that a flat silver surface simply would not, and it keeps the counters legible at exactly those angles where a polished disc would glare back instead. The date aperture is cut directly into the gold plate itself, with no framing ring around it. At 38 mm the composition is tight and instrument-like; at 40 mm it relaxes noticeably. The case is 10.6 mm tall and closed with a sapphire crystal at the back, through which the rose gold movement adds a third warm surface to the watch.
Return to zero is the operation that separates a genuinely good chronograph from a merely functional one, and the mechanism behind it deserves a proper description. Each of the chronograph wheels carries a heart-shaped cam, mounted on its arbor and turning along with it. When the reset is pressed, a hammer drops onto every one of those hearts at once. Because of the shape, a hammer landing anywhere on a heart cam will slide down its curve and force the cam, and therefore the wheel and the hand, to rotate until the hammer sits in the notch at the base. That notch corresponds exactly to zero. The elegance of the arrangement is that the hand simply cannot stop anywhere else: whatever position it happened to hold when the hammer fell, it must end up in exactly the same place every time. Getting all the hammers to land simultaneously, and getting each heart cam shaped and finished so it delivers the hand crisply without bouncing, is a large part of what separates chronograph makers. On this particular watch a single sliding lever handles the reset, and a cam replaces the more usual column wheel entirely. The calibre 1300.3 runs 254 parts and 32 jewels at 21,600 alternations per hour, with 120 hours of reserve.
Most chronographs in this segment of the market are not actually made by the houses selling them, which is worth knowing when assessing what this particular one is. The economics of it are unforgiving: developing a chronograph from scratch takes years of work and a great deal of money, and a manufacture selling only a few hundred watches in a year has almost no way of recovering that outlay. The industry's answer to that has long been the module: a chronograph mechanism built by a specialist supplier and then mounted on top of a base movement bought in from elsewhere. It works perfectly well in practice, and a very large number of thoroughly respected watches are built in exactly this way. Journe did not do any of that. The Octa Chronographe's chronograph is integrated into his own automatic architecture rather than stacked on top of somebody else's ebauche, which is precisely why the watch stands 10.6 mm tall rather than the thirteen or fourteen that a module would have required. That decision is the reason this watch exists in the form it does at all, and it is also a large part of why it only lasted four years in the catalog.
This is the Octa Chronographe to buy if you want one watch that covers the ground rather than a demonstration piece. Platinum with a 5N gold dial is the classic pairing for this reference and the one that turns up most often of any of them, which remains a strictly relative statement about a watch that only ran for four years. The chronograph is genuinely usable rather than ornamental, the large date is properly legible, and the five-day reserve means the watch survives a weekend in a drawer without needing to be reset afterward. Decide between the 38 mm and the 40 mm before you start looking, because on a three-counter dial the difference is substantial. Buying one, exercise the chronograph fully: start it, stop it, reset it, and watch the hands return exactly to zero rather than merely settling somewhere near it. Then run the flyback from a moving start and confirm that the reset and the restart happen together as one single action. Check that the date jumps cleanly and instantaneously at midnight, and have the full service history confirmed with the manufacture rather than an independent workshop.
