The Octa collection emerged in 2001 as François-Paul Journe's answer to a problem he considered fundamental: automatic movements sacrifice chronometric precision for convenience. Traditional self-winding calibers prioritize compact dimensions and immediate wearability over extended power reserve—resulting in watches requiring daily wear to maintain running, losing time if set aside for weekends. Journe's solution: Caliber 1300, featuring single barrel containing 1-meter-long mainspring (versus typical 300-400mm), delivering 120-hour guaranteed chronometric reserve (actual 160 hours ±10 hours total reserve). The achievement required solving the barrel integration challenge—fitting a barrel stable enough to contain meter-long spring within movement measuring same dimensions as competitors' 40-hour calibers. Three years development, but the result established "Octa" designation: October (Latin for eight) referencing eight-day marine chronometer reserve, even though wristwatch application delivers five days rather than full week.

The Automatique Lune represents the Octa platform's most elegant complication: moonphase paired with large date and power reserve indicator, launched 2019 as third-generation dial layout. Earlier iterations (Octa Lune 2003-2015) employed off-centered subdials; the Automatique Lune centralizes hours/minutes for improved legibility while maintaining asymmetric visual interest through complication positioning. The Black Label variant—boutique-exclusive available only through F.P. Journe boutiques/espaces—transforms the standard silvered dial into dramatic black lacquered surface revealing dial architecture through maximum contrast.

The 40mm platinum case (also available 42mm, both measure 10.6mm thick) employs Journe's restrained design vocabulary: polished domed bezel, straight lugs tapering toward strap attachment, flat crown with signature silk-rope knurling pattern. The crown measures larger than earlier Octa generations—Journe enlarged it responding to client feedback regarding easier crown manipulation for date/moon setting. The crown operates in three positions: position 1 (pushed) for winding, position 2 (first pull) for bidirectional date/moon setting via opposite rotation directions, position 3 (full pull) for time setting. Water resistance extends 30 meters—Journe's standard specification for dress watches with dial-accessed movements.

The Black Label dial fabricates from white gold with black lacquered surface, center employing Clous de Paris guilloché pattern—pyramidal hobnail texture creating light refraction through thousands of tiny facets. The guilloché work, executed by Les Cadraniers de Genève (Journe's dial manufactory), creates subtle dimensionality visible under changing light angles despite black base color.

Central hours and minutes display via blued steel hands—Journe's signature teardrop shape with open-circle counterweight on minute hand. White gold applied Arabic numerals mark 12, 3, 6, 9 positions with railroad minute track printed around dial perimeter. The numerals employ blue printing (versus white on standard editions), coordinating with moonphase disc.

The large date window positions at 11 o'clock: dual discs (units and tens) creating 4.7mm x 2.6mm aperture—substantially larger than typical 2.5-3mm date windows, improving legibility without magnification. Date numerals print in white on black discs matching dial aesthetic. The moonphase aperture at 7 o'clock reveals blue disc with white stars and gold moon—the 18k gold moon and stars against lapis-blue background creating romantic complication Journe describes as "most poetic." Moonphase accuracy: one day deviation every 122 years.

Small seconds subdial positions at 4:30—slightly unconventional placement derived from movement architecture (seconds driven off third wheel positioned at this angle). The subdial employs recessed surface with concentric circular graining, blued steel hand with open-circle counterweight echoing minute hand design.

Power reserve indicator occupies fan-shaped sector at 9 o'clock, graduated 0-120 hours with red hand tracking remaining reserve. The retrograde display (hand sweeps arc then instantly returns to zero when fully wound) provides constant visual feedback on movement state—crucial for 120-hour reserve where traditional linear indicators become difficult parsing.

F.P. Journe fabricates Caliber 1300.3 entirely in 18k rose gold—base plate, bridges, wheels executing in precious metal rather than brass/German silver. The movement measures 36mm diameter operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz) with 37 jewels. The barrel contains the signature 1-meter mainspring wound via off-center 22k gold rotor.

The rotor employs unidirectional winding via self-locking ceramic ball bearing system—representing Caliber 1300.3's key innovation over earlier 1300 bidirectional winding. Journe developed this responding to client observation: "my friend's Octa never winds completely because he works at computer—right hand doesn't move enough." The unidirectional system with ceramic ball bearings allows rotor free rotation clockwise (winding direction), locks counterclockwise. When wrist movement stops, rotor returns to rest position via gravity. This maximizes winding efficiency from minimal wrist motion—Chappuis cyclotest demonstrates full wind in 1.5 hours versus 8-12 hours for conventional bidirectional systems.

The movement finishing meets Journe's standards: Côtes de Genève striping on bridges (parallel wave pattern), circular graining on base plate, polished bevels, engraved signatures "Exclusive Power Reserve System" and "Precision Chronometer" on movement plates. The rotor receives barleycorn guilloché pattern, visible through sapphire exhibition caseback alongside the rose gold movement architecture.

The balance wheel employs four adjustable inertia weights for free-sprung regulation (no regulator index), Anachron flat hairspring (Journe's proprietary alloy), mobile stud holder. The escapement uses in-line lever design with 15-tooth escape wheel—Journe's preferred configuration balancing efficiency with reliability.
