The F.P. Journe Lune, reference LN, is the moon phase watch of the Classique Collection and the most direct descendant of the Octa Lune, which took the Best Men's Watch prize at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève in 2003. Its movement belongs to the Octa family of automatic calibres that François-Paul Journe spent three years developing around a single goal: a self-winding watch able to run for more than five days without giving up a full-size balance. The current Lune revisits that design with a clearer reading of the time and a date aperture twice the size of its predecessor's. This example is the platinum version on the matching platinum bracelet, a configuration that sets the palest dial in the reference inside the heaviest metal Journe offers.
The case is polished platinum, offered by F.P. Journe in two diameters, 40 or 42 mm, at an overall height of 10.7 mm, and the platinum bracelet continues the line of the case rather than contrasting with it. The dial is built in two layers, and both are made of gold. The main plate here is white gold, which gives the face a cool grey-silver tone that sits naturally against platinum without looking like steel. Set off-centre toward the upper right is the hour dial, where the gold numerals are surfaced with a diamond tool so that they catch light as polished facets rather than printed marks. A polished steel ring, screwed down onto the main dial, frames that hour display; Journe uses the device across his collection, and it is one of the quickest ways to recognise his work at a distance. The hours and minutes are read by blued steel hands, while the subsidiary displays use rhodium-plated steel, so the time reads in blue and every secondary indication stays in the pale register of the dial. The moon disc, the oversized date and the power reserve scale are spread around the rest of the face, which keeps the hour dial uncluttered. On the wrist the platinum case and bracelet give the Lune real weight, but the monochrome white gold dial keeps it reading as a dress watch rather than a statement piece.
Alongside the hours and minutes, the Lune shows small seconds at half past four, a large date, a power reserve at ten o'clock and the phases of the moon. The date sits in a very large aperture, twice the size of the earlier Octa Lune's, and changes instantly at midnight rather than creeping across over several hours. The power reserve is retrograde and scaled to 120 hours, the span the Octa calibre was designed around, and a fully wound movement carries on for roughly 160 hours in total. The moon phase has its own dedicated wheel train, and both the moon and the date are set through the crown by turning it in opposite directions in the same position, so no correctors are cut into the platinum case. Winding is automatic, through an off-centre gold rotor that turns in one direction on a self-locking ball bearing and sits to the side of the movement rather than covering it. The movement itself is made of rose gold, as in all of Journe's production. The idea behind it is easy to state and hard to execute: rather than adding gearing to stretch a small spring, Journe fitted a mainspring roughly one metre long in the same plane as the gear train, which allowed him to keep a large balance where most long-running watches shrink theirs.
The Octa calibre became the base for an entire branch of Journe's work, because he designed it so that different complications could be built onto the same movement while every model kept the same case size. On that platform he built a power reserve with large date, a flyback chronograph with large date and a retrograde annual calendar, as well as the moon phase. The Octa Lune was the moon phase member of that family, and its 2003 prize in Geneva came while the Journe workshop was still young and known mostly to a small circle of collectors. Today the Lune sits in the Classique Collection alongside the Chronomètre Souverain, the Chronomètre Bleu, the Automatique, the Automatique Lune, the Divine and the Quantième Perpétuel. Within that line-up it is the reference that most directly carries the original Octa layout: an off-centre hour dial, a screwed steel ring, a large date and a power reserve arranged around a moon phase. The current version kept that architecture intact. What changed was legibility, through a larger date and a clearer reading of the hours, the kind of revision Journe tends to make when he returns to a design, adjusting proportions and readability while leaving the mechanical idea untouched.
The Lune appeals to collectors who want Journe's automatic work in its most complete everyday form, with time, date, moon phase and power reserve on one dial and a movement built to run for days without attention. It is the award-winning design of the Octa period, reworked rather than replaced, and it remains in production in the Classique Collection. In platinum on the platinum bracelet it is the most substantial configuration of reference LN, and the white gold dial keeps that weight from reading as ostentatious; across a room the watch looks quiet, and its detail only shows up close, in the diamond-cut gold numerals and the screwed steel ring. The choice between the 40 and 42 mm case is a matter of wrist and preference rather than a different watch, since F.P. Journe offers both sizes. For a collector who already owns a Chronomètre Souverain or a Chronomètre Bleu, the Lune adds the complications those watches deliberately leave out, and it does so in the same design language, with the same rose gold movement construction and the same standard of finishing.
