F.P. Journe Chronomètre À Résonance Ref. RN Souveraine Rose Gold Salmon Dial

The Chronomètre à Résonance arrived in 2000 as the first wristwatch built on resonance, an effect Breguet studied in pocket watches in the early 1800s and Antide Janvier used in pendulum clocks. François-Paul Journe first attempted it in a pocket watch in 1983 and returned to the problem fifteen years later. The production history is unusually granular for a modern reference: roughly ten pre-production pieces in 1999, about forty pre-souscription watches across 1999 and 2000, and about twenty souscription pieces in 2000, all in 38 mm cases with brass movements. Those two details — the smaller case and the brass mainplate — were both phased out in the early 2000s, which is why the earliest Résonances are tracked separately from everything that followed.

The case is rose gold, measuring 40 mm across and standing 9.1 mm deep, on a rose gold bracelet. The dial is rose gold and whitened guilloché silver and the hands are blued steel. F.P. Journe applies the guilloché to a silver plate and then whitens it, so the engine turning reads as texture rather than as shine, and the gold elements sit proud of that ground rather than competing with it.

This watch is reference RN, whose double display reads analog 12 hours on both dials, over two independent movements under one dial plate, each with its own hands. Two analog dials reading the same hour make the RN the most symmetrical of the five generations.

The RN ran from 2004 to 2010 and sits between the original Series R of 2000 and the RT that replaced it. F.P. Journe moved his mainplate from rhodium-coated brass to 18K rose gold in 2004, the year the RN began, so this generation is the first Résonance built entirely in the gold-movement era.

The reference has run through five generations and they are told apart by the display and the case rather than by any mark on the outside. Series R arrived in 2000, RN ran from 2004 to 2010, RT appeared in 2010 for the tenth anniversary, a double-display RT in 2019 and RQ in 2020. A Résonance is therefore dated by reading its left-hand display and measuring its case, and a record that captures neither cannot place the watch within twenty years of production.
