Every other stone in the anniversary Royal Oak gem set gives up something when it is cut smaller, because colour depends on how far light travels through the material and a shorter path returns a paler result. Orange spessartite gives up the least. Garnets of this species bend light more strongly than beryl, quartz, topaz or tourmaline, so each stone returns more of what enters it, and a small spessartite baguette holds its intensity where a small emerald or a small ruby would begin to thin. That makes the 37 mm case the size at which this stone opens the widest gap over the rest of the set. Spessartite is also a recent arrival in useful quantities, a mineralogical curiosity until deposits in Namibia and later Nigeria came on line in the 1990s, and orange is the only appearance of its colour among the ten with nothing else in the programme approaching it.
The case is 37 mm across and 10 mm thick in white gold, with the octagonal bezel gem-set in baguette-cut orange spessartites. The plain 37 mm selfwinding Royal Oak of the same generation measures 9.1 mm, so the complete setting costs nine tenths of a millimetre here against one and one tenth at 41 mm, because smaller stones require shallower channels cut into the metal. The eight hexagonal screw positions survive and remain the fixed points the continuous run of stones is built around. The dial is white gold set with baguette-cut orange spessartites across its full surface and carries no applied hour-markers. The stones are the dial. Only the white gold Royal Oak hands sit above them. The bracelet continues the setting along its length, tapering from the case and closing on an AP folding clasp. Pairing a strongly refractive warm stone with a cool white metal produces the most emphatic contrast anywhere in the set, further than ruby manages, because orange sits at a greater temperature distance from white gold than red does and returns more light while doing it. At 37 mm the field is denser and the individual planes smaller, so the effect is less like blocks of colour turning on and off and more like a continuous surface that brightens and dims as a whole.
The function set is hours, minutes and centre seconds. There is no date. An aperture cut through a continuous stone surface would break the setting at the point where the run most needs to stay whole, and on a smaller dial the proportional cost of that break is higher. Centre seconds holds all three hands on one axis and avoids the second circular interruption a small seconds subdial would impose. Time is read from hand position against the case, since the dial provides no markers. Spessartite is a middle-tone stone and the white gold hands separate from it adequately, but the brightness of the material works against legibility in strong light in a way the darker stones avoid, since the dial can return enough light to compete with the hands rather than sit behind them. That is the direct cost of the property that makes this reference distinctive.
The Royal Oak is the collection Audemars Piguet is built on, and the 37 mm anniversary references form a ladder in how far the setting is taken. The 15550 is plain at 9.1 mm, the 15551 adds a diamond-set bezel over an unset dial at the same height, and this reference sets dial, bezel and bracelet together and reaches 10 mm. Ten stones were used: orange spessartite, ruby, blue sapphire, emerald, tsavorite, tanzanite, blue topaz, amethyst, pink tourmaline and yellow chrysoberyl. Each was issued at 37 mm here and at 41 mm at reference 15514, giving twenty references on one construction in two sizes. Spessartite and tsavorite are both garnets, which makes them the only two references in the programme built on the same mineral group in different colours, and both were commercially scarce until the second half of the last century. Yellow chrysoberyl is the only other warm stone in the set that is neither red nor pink, which puts it and this reference in direct comparison.
This reference suits a collector who wants the loudest version of the set in the smaller case, which is a more specific taste than it sounds. At 41 mm the octagonal geometry still dominates and the stones are applied to it; at 37 mm the setting takes over, and orange spessartite is the stone that pushes hardest once it does. There is no restrained reading of it. It appeals to someone who already owns conventional Royal Oaks and wants one that operates at a different register entirely, and to someone interested in a material whose availability is a matter of recent mining history rather than of long tradition. Anyone comparing it against the tsavorite version is comparing two garnets from the same period of supply, which is a closer relationship than the colours suggest. The anniversary designation ties production to the occasion.
