The Little Lange 1 Moon Phase 182.886 surrounds a night-sky dial of dark blue gold flux with a bezel of brilliant-cut diamonds, set in White Gold. A. Lange & Söhne presented it in April 2021 at Watches & Wonders as the gem-set partner of the 182.086, and the pairing follows a pattern the smaller moon-phase Lange 1 has kept since 2017, when the Rose Gold model was likewise offered with a plain bezel or with stones. Here the diamonds have a particular role. Lange's motif for the watch was a bright moonlit night, and the ring of white stones around the dark dial reads like the halo of light around the moon itself, framing the copper sparkle of the gold flux without competing with it. The 182.886 is therefore the fullest expression of that idea: a sky of glittering glass, a White Gold moon among stars, star-shaped hour markers and, at the edge, a circle of diamonds. It is also the first diamond-set Lange 1 with a gold flux dial, since the 2021 pair introduced the material to the Lange 1 family, and it brings the jewellery tradition of the Little Lange 1 into the cooler palette of White Gold.
The case is White Gold, 36.8 mm across and 10 mm thick, its flanks and lugs polished to a mirror finish, a departure from the brushed case sides common on Lange's larger watches. The diamonds occupy the bezel alone, set in a single ring, and the case otherwise matches the plain version line for line. Within that frame the dial is solid silver coated with dark blue gold flux, a glass containing copper crystals that scatter light into countless small points, so the surface changes from near-black in shade to glittering blue in sunlight. Rhodium-plated gold Roman numerals mark 3, 6, 9 and 12 o'clock, with stars of the same metal in between, and the hands are rhodium-plated gold too, a combination that keeps the white tones of the dial furniture, the case and the diamonds in one register. The date discs are dark blue instead of white, so the outsize date sits within the sky. The strap is deep blue alligator finished with a glossy lacquer and fine sparkling pigment, and it closes with a solid White Gold prong buckle; together with the diamonds, the effect is of a watch made for the evening, dark and bright at once.
Mechanically the 182.886 and 182.086 are one watch. The off-centre time display occupies the left of the dial; the right side stacks Lange's outsize date at the upper edge, the scale counting down the 72 hours of running time beneath it, and the small seconds at 5 o'clock, inside which the moon waxes and wanes. Lange quotes a single day of drift in 122.6 years for that display, which completes each lunation in 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 3 seconds, as the real moon does on average, and its White Gold moon crosses a disc decorated with 628 stars. The date and the moon are corrected with two push-pieces sunk into the case band near 10 and 7 o'clock, and because they sit flush, the band stays smooth beneath the bezel. Winding is by hand through the crown, and the movement's 411 parts include twin mainspring barrels and a stop-seconds mechanism that holds the seconds hand still while the time is set. The watch has no day and night indication, the feature that sets the full-size Lange 1 Moon Phase apart; the extra disc would have made the small case too tall, so the Little Lange 1 retains a single-layer lunar display beneath its gold flux sky.
Diamonds have accompanied the Little Lange 1 for much of its history. After its launch in 1998 as a compact men's model, the watch became Lange's principal Lange 1 for women, dressed with mother-of-pearl dials, coloured guilloché and occasional gem-set bezels, and the first Little Lange 1 Moon Phase of 2009 was made only with diamonds, in a limited series of 150 pieces with white or blue mother-of-pearl dials. When the moon phase entered the regular range in 2017, the diamond bezel became a choice rather than a given, offered on the Rose Gold 182.830. The 2021 White Gold pair then brought gold flux, used by Lange on the Saxonia Thin since 2018, to the Lange 1 family, together with the first star-shaped hour markers on a Lange 1. The 182.886 thus links the earliest identity of the model, with its blue mother-of-pearl and diamond bezel, to its most recent one: blue once again, now in glittering glass rather than shell, and again framed in stones. Within the current Little Lange 1 Moon Phase range of four references, it is the only one that combines White Gold, gold flux and diamonds.
The 182.886 is aimed at collectors who want a Lange for evening wear with a genuine idea behind the decoration. Every element of the dial, from the copper sparkle of the gold flux to the stars between the Roman numerals and the White Gold moon, serves the theme of a moonlit sky, and the diamonds complete that picture rather than simply decorating the case. It will appeal to those who already own a classic Lange 1 and want a second watch that is visibly different, to collectors of Lange's small-format pieces for women, and to anyone drawn to moon phases treated as small pictures rather than simple windows. Against the Rose Gold 182.830, it is cooler and more dramatic, trading guilloché and a nacre white strap for dark blue glass and glossy blue alligator. Against its own plain-bezel twin, it is the dressier choice. At 36.8 mm and 10 mm high it stays discreet under a cuff despite the stones, and through the sapphire caseback it shows the hand-engraved balance cock, gold chatons and striped German silver plate found on every Lange 1.
