The Little Lange 1 Moon Phase 182.030 is the Rose Gold reference with which A. Lange & Söhne relaunched its smaller moon-phase Lange 1 at SIHH 2017. The idea itself was not untried: in 2009, fifteen years after the Lange 1 first appeared, the manufacture had made a Little Lange 1 Moon Phase as a limited run of 150 pieces with mother-of-pearl dials and diamond bezels. The 2017 watch turned that jewellery-led edition into a permanent member of the Lange 1 family, gave it the current generation of hand-wound movement and dressed it in a dial of solid gold engraved with guilloché and finished in Silver. Lange describes the model as a design statement through its dial decoration and a mechanical highlight through its movement, and the 182.030 makes both claims without relying on gem-setting. Its 36.8 mm Rose Gold case is 1.7 mm smaller than that of the full-size Lange 1 Moon Phase, which was updated in the same year, and it was the first Little Lange 1 Moon Phase offered outside a limited series. For collectors who want the asymmetric Lange 1 composition with an astronomical complication in a compact size, this is the reference from which every later Little Lange 1 Moon Phase descends.
Polished on every surface, the Rose Gold case is 36.8 mm in diameter and stands 9.5 mm tall, with the crown on the right flank and two recessed correctors set into the case band: one between 10 and 11 o'clock for the outsize date and one between 7 and 8 o'clock for the moon. The dial is the main event. It is cut from solid gold, engine-turned with a fine guilloché pattern and given a soft Silver finish, so the surface shifts from pale to bright as the wrist moves. The appliqués and hour markers are solid gold as well, and the hands are Rose Gold, tying the dial to the case. Along the lower edge the word Doppelfederhaus names the twin mainspring barrels inside, the same inscription carried by the full-size Lange 1. The lunar disc echoes the dial, showing two Rose Gold moons and stars on a Silver ground instead of the dark blue sky common to moon phases, so the complication reads as part of the dial rather than a window into another colour. The strap is nacre white alligator with a Rose Gold prong buckle, a light, pearly choice that suits the Silver dial, although the 36.8 mm case and 19 mm lug width make the watch just as convincing on a brown or black alligator strap.
Four indications share the dial, arranged in the geometry the Lange 1 established. The hours and minutes run on an off-centre subdial on the left, while the right half stacks the outsize date at upper right, the power reserve indicator with its AUF and AB markings along the right edge, and a small seconds subdial at 5 o'clock whose upper portion opens onto the moon. The date is shown by two discs in a double aperture framed in gold, its numerals far larger than those of a standard date window. The moon disc tracks the synodic month of 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 3 seconds, and Lange states that it needs correcting by one day only after 122.6 years of continuous running. Unlike the full-size Lange 1 Moon Phase, the Little Lange 1 version has no day and night sky behind the moon: the thinner case and dial left no room for the extra disc, so the smaller watch keeps the classic two-moon presentation. The hand-wound movement has 411 parts, beats at 3 Hz and draws 72 hours of running time from its twin barrels, and pulling the crown stops the balance so the seconds hand can be set exactly to a time signal. The balance uses eccentric poising weights with a hairspring produced by Lange itself.
The Little Lange 1 has always been the quieter branch of the Lange 1 family. The smaller model of the late 1990s was conceived as a compact men's watch before it gradually became one worn largely by women, and its dials moved from classic Silver and Champagne tones to mother-of-pearl, with gem-set bezels offered alongside. The moon phase came to the Lange 1 in 2002, but the smaller case had to wait until 2009 for its own version, the 150-piece limited edition that marked fifteen years of the Lange 1. When Lange rebuilt the family around the hand-wound movement of 2015, its fiftieth manufacture movement since the revival, the moon-phase variants followed: the full-size Lange 1 Moon Phase gained its day and night sky in 2017, and the Little Lange 1 Moon Phase returned in the same year as the 182.030 with an adapted version of that movement. A diamond-set twin, the 182.830, was offered alongside it. The model has since been reinterpreted twice, in 2019 as a 25-piece silver-and-blue edition within the ten-watch series marking 25 years since the manufacture's revival, and in 2021 with a White Gold case and a dark blue gold flux dial. The Rose Gold 182.030 remains the classic reading of the watch, the one that established its guilloché dial and warm palette.
The 182.030 suits collectors who want a Lange 1 with a complication but find 38.5 mm or larger too much for the wrist or for a shirt cuff. It is also the only current Little Lange 1 Moon Phase in Rose Gold without stones, which gives it a clear place for those who prefer the guilloché dial to speak for itself. Next to the gold flux White Gold models, its Silver dial and Rose Gold details read as the traditional choice, closer in spirit to the classic Rose Gold Lange 1 than to the more decorative versions of the Little Lange 1. Its nacre white strap marks it as a watch Lange presents chiefly for women, yet 36.8 mm is a size close to that of many classic dress watches, and a darker alligator strap changes its character entirely. Owners of a full-size Lange 1 will find the same layout with a moon added and the case reduced, while collectors of moon phases will find one of the few in this size with a dial of solid gold and a hand-wound movement that can be watched through the sapphire caseback. In a collection it plays the part of the understated Lange: the reference that shows the Lange 1 design at its most compact, finished in Rose Gold and Silver guilloché, and still part of the regular catalogue.
