Made in just 150 numbered pieces for Lange boutiques, the Little Lange 1 181.062 brings one of the most talked-about anniversary pieces of recent years to a more compact case. When A. Lange & Söhne celebrated thirty years of the Lange 1 in October 2024, it chose two colour schemes that each looked back to an uncommon early reference, and it offered both in the full-size Lange 1 and in the 36.8 mm Little Lange 1. This version pairs Platinum with a dial faced in black onyx, the first onyx dial ever fitted to a Lange 1, and the combination deliberately evokes a rare white-metal Lange 1 with a black dial that collectors have long sought and nicknamed the 'Darth'. The Little Lange 1 was created for those who prefer a smaller watch, and it gives up nothing to the larger model: the movement is the same, the display is the same, and the only technical difference is the way the date is corrected. In this edition, the smaller case concentrates the drama of the onyx, making it perhaps the most intense expression of the anniversary series and one of the rarest.
The case is Platinum, 36.8 mm in diameter and 10 mm in height, with alternating polished and brushed surfaces and, instead of the larger model's date pusher, a discreet recessed corrector set into the case band. The dial is built on a solid silver base covered with a thin, polished layer of black onyx, chosen by hand for its uniform depth, so every piece has a glossy, almost liquid surface. On it, the asymmetric Lange 1 composition is traced in rhodium-plated gold. The hours and minutes occupy an off-centre subdial on the left, while the outsize date, the indicator of remaining running time and the small seconds align vertically on the right, together forming the isosceles triangle that has governed the Lange 1 since 1994. The outsize date, framed in rhodium-finished gold, appears with particular clarity against the dark stone. The contrast of cool metal and deep black gives the smaller watch a crisp, graphic presence out of all proportion to its size. A glossy black alligator strap and a Platinum prong buckle complete it, and the edition number is engraved on the case.
Inside the compact case is exactly the hand-wound movement used in the full-size Lange 1, the 368-part design the manufacture introduced in 2015 as its fiftieth movement. Its two mainspring barrels store energy for 72 hours of running, and the AUF/AB indicator shows how much remains. The outsize date, formed by a tens cross and a units disc lying next to each other, advances instantly at midnight, a detail introduced with this generation, and its numerals are around three times larger than those of a conventional date. A balance fitted with eccentric poising weights and a balance spring of Lange's own manufacture regulates the watch, and pulling the crown stops the seconds for synchronisation with a time signal. Through the sapphire caseback, the German silver plates and bridges, the Glashütte ribbing, the freehand engraving of the balance cock and the gold chatons display the manufacture's finishing, which does not change with the size of the watch. As always at Lange, the movement is assembled twice, the second time after every component has been cleaned and decorated.
The Little Lange 1 joined the family in the late 1990s as a smaller version of the watch that had launched the manufacture's revival in 1994, and it quickly became appreciated by collectors with slimmer wrists and by those who simply prefer more discreet proportions. Its current 36.8 mm case is 1.7 mm smaller than the Lange 1's, and it shares the same movement and layout. Over the years it has appeared with a range of dials, from classic silver to guilloché and gold flux, often in colours the full-size model does not offer. For the thirtieth anniversary of the Lange 1, the manufacture gave it both of the special combinations, Platinum with onyx and Rose Gold with blue, each in 150 pieces, half the number made of the full-size versions. That smaller production makes the Little Lange 1 anniversary editions the scarcer of the series, and the Platinum and onyx version, with its nod to the 'Darth', stands out as a particularly meaningful tribute within the family's thirty-year history.
The 181.062 appeals to collectors who want a significant Lange 1 in a size that suits a slimmer wrist or a more understated style. Its onyx dial and Platinum case create a dramatic yet refined combination that works beautifully in the evening and remains discreet during the day, and its limited production of 150 numbered pieces makes it one of the rarest modern Lange 1 variants. The outsize date and the indicator of remaining running time keep it practical, while the hand-wound movement invites a daily ritual. It will interest collectors of anniversary editions, admirers of the Lange 1's history, and those who appreciate stone dials. For a collection built around Lange's signature model, it offers a compact yet powerful statement; for a single watch, it combines rarity, history and one of the most recognisable designs in modern watchmaking in a size that never overwhelms the wrist.
