Conceived for slender wrists, the Little Lange 1 181.038 brings the mechanical and design features of the classic Lange 1 into a 36.8 mm White Gold case. A. Lange & Söhne gives this version a Light Grey dial made of gold and decorated with guilloché, matched by a light grey alligator strap for a tonal, monochrome look. The asymmetric layout dates to the first Lange 1, presented in Dresden in 1994.

The guilloché Light Grey dial carries the off-center hours and minutes, the small seconds, Lange's outsize date and a power-reserve indicator, with White Gold hands and markers. The case is 9.5 mm high, and the hand-wound movement, shared with the larger Lange 1, is visible through the sapphire caseback. Like every Lange movement, it is assembled twice and given a three-quarter plate of German silver and a hand-engraved balance cock. A White Gold prong buckle closes the strap.

The Little Lange 1 181.038 brings a rare decorative craft to A. Lange & Söhne's most compact version of its defining watch. Presented at SIHH 2018, it was one of three Little Lange 1 references given dials of solid gold decorated with engine-turned guilloché, alongside a Rose Gold version with a brown dial and a limited White Gold edition with a purple dial. This White Gold reference has a light grey guilloché dial and a matching light grey alligator strap, creating a tonal, monochrome look quite different from the classic silver-dialled Lange 1. The Little Lange 1 itself was conceived for slender wrists and for collectors who prefer understated proportions, and it shares every technical and design feature of the Lange 1, apart from the method of correcting the date. Guilloché has a long tradition in fine watchmaking, and on the Little Lange 1 its fine engraved patterns catch the light in a way that emphasises the asymmetry of the dial. The result is a watch that feels both delicate and exacting, bringing a touch of traditional ornament to one of the most distinctive modern designs in watchmaking.

The White Gold case measures 36.8 mm in diameter, 1.7 mm smaller than the Lange 1, and 9.5 mm in height, with polished surfaces and a recessed corrector for the date instead of a pusher. The dial is made of solid gold and engine-turned with a guilloché pattern before being given its light grey finish, so that its tone shifts between silver, slate and charcoal as the light changes. The Lange 1 layout is preserved in full: the hours and minutes on an off-centre subdial to the left, and on the right a vertical column formed by the date, the reserve scale and the running seconds, forming the familiar isosceles triangle with the time display. White Gold hands and applied markers read crisply against the textured grey, and the gold frame of the outsize date provides a small, bright accent. Because the guilloché catches the light differently across the dial, the watch has a lively, changing character that plain dials cannot offer. The light grey alligator strap, matched to the dial, and a White Gold prong buckle complete an unusually harmonious and soft composition. Up close, the fine lines of the guilloché can be followed across the dial, a detail that rewards patient observation.

Inside is the hand-wound movement used in the full-size Lange 1, introduced in 2015 as the fiftieth movement created by the manufacture since its revival. It has 368 parts and two mainspring barrels that provide 72 hours of running time, tracked by the AUF/AB indicator on the dial. The outsize date, displayed by a cross carrying the tens and a disc carrying the units, switches instantly at midnight, and its numerals are much larger than those of a conventional date window. The balance has eccentric poising weights and oscillates with a balance spring developed and made by Lange, and pulling the crown freezes the seconds for synchronising. Seen through the sapphire caseback, the movement shows the same finishing as its larger sibling: German silver left untreated and striped with Glashütte ribbing, gold chatons fixed by thermally blued screws, and a balance cock bearing an engraver's freehand work. In keeping with house practice, it is built, taken apart for cleaning and decoration, and built again before casing.

The Lange 1 was one of the four watches that marked A. Lange & Söhne's return in 1994, and the Little Lange 1 followed a few years later for collectors who preferred smaller proportions. Over time the smaller model has become a family in its own right and a canvas for creative dial treatments, including guilloché, gold flux and a range of colours not offered on the full-size Lange 1. The guilloché dials of 2018 marked a particular high point in this respect, bringing a traditional decorative technique to a design admired for its modern geometry. The three versions presented that year, grey in White Gold, brown in Rose Gold and purple in a limited White Gold edition, each paired with a matching strap, showed how colour and texture could give the Little Lange 1 a distinct personality. The light grey 181.038 is the most understated of the three, a watch whose subtle tones reveal themselves gradually and whose guilloché gives the familiar Lange 1 layout an unexpected depth and softness. It shows that even a design as resolved as the Lange 1 can still surprise.

The 181.038 appeals to collectors who want the Lange 1's design and mechanics in a compact size with a more decorative, tactile character. Its guilloché dial, matching strap and White Gold case create a refined, monochrome look that suits both day and evening wear, and its 36.8 mm case is ideal for slimmer wrists or for those who favour discreet proportions. Its big date and reserve display serve daily needs, while the hand-wound movement adds a daily ritual. It will interest collectors who appreciate traditional dial decoration, those who own a classic Lange 1 and want a contrasting version, and anyone seeking a Lange with a quieter, more personal presence. For a Lange collection, it adds texture and subtlety; for a single watch, it offers one of the most distinctive faces in modern watchmaking in an intimate, elegant form. It is a watch to be discovered slowly.
