Rose Gold and a Silver dial give the Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase 139.032 the warm, classic reading of A. Lange & Söhne's large-format lunar display. Introduced at SIHH 2014 alongside Yellow Gold and Platinum versions, the model moved the moon from the small seconds, where earlier Lange 1 moon phases had placed it, into the heart of the hour and minute display. There, on a solid gold disc 14.3 mm wide, the moon and a sky full of stars can be shown at a size few wristwatches offer, with the hands passing over them as they tell the time. The watch builds on the Grand Lange 1, the 41 mm version of the asymmetric Lange 1 of 1994, whose dedicated movement from 2012 made it possible to integrate the complication while keeping the case slim. Of the three launch versions, the Rose Gold reference is the most widely available, offered through Lange's regular network rather than only in flagship boutiques, and it pairs the romance of its astronomical display with a warm metal and a pale dial that together recall the classic gold pocket watches of the past.
The Rose Gold case measures 41 mm across and 9.5 mm high, and its polished bezel and caseback frame a satin-finished case band with a pusher for the outsize date. The Silver dial of solid silver follows the Grand Lange 1 layout. On the left, the large hour and minute subdial frames the lunar disc, whose blue colour comes from a patented coating applied to solid gold before more than three hundred stars of varying sizes are cut into it by laser. Golden moons move slowly across this sky, visible through an opening in the centre of the time display. On the right, the outsize date, the AUF/AB scale and the small seconds stand in a vertical line, and with the time display they form the isosceles triangle that gives the Lange 1 its balance. Rose Gold markers and hands bring warmth to the pale dial and complement the blue of the moon disc, creating a harmonious combination of gold, silver and deep blue. A Rose Gold prong buckle fastens its alligator strap, a traditional and elegant finish. In daylight the silver dial looks crisp and bright; in the evening, the Rose Gold warms and the blue disc seems to deepen.
The movement is hand-wound and consists of 446 components, based on the movement Lange developed for the Grand Lange 1 in 2012 with the addition of the moon-phase mechanism. It stores enough energy for 72 hours of running. The lunar disc is driven by a seven-gear transmission designed to follow the true average length of the lunar month closely, and Lange states that the deviation per cycle is less than a minute and that the display needs adjusting by a single day only after 122.6 years of continuous running. The outsize date uses Lange's patented combination of a tens cross and a units disc, and it is advanced by the pusher, while the moon has its own recessed corrector. A stop-seconds mechanism halts the screw balance, fitted with a Lange-made balance spring, when the crown is pulled. Through the sapphire caseback, the movement displays German silver plates with Glashütte ribbing, gold chatons and blued screws, and a balance cock engraved by hand, each finished in the manufacture's workshops. Every movement is assembled twice before being cased.
Lange 1 owners have been able to choose a moon phase since 2002, though for twelve years it lived inside the seconds register. In 2014 the Grand Lange 1 Moon Phase brought it onto the main dial instead, an approach that the larger 41 mm case and the Grand Lange 1's dedicated movement made possible. The model was the thirteenth Lange watch with a moon phase, and its large, richly detailed lunar disc quickly made it one of the most admired versions of the complication in the collection. It was later offered as a 'Lumen' edition with a semi-transparent dial and as a twenty-fifth anniversary model. Among its regular versions, the Rose Gold 139.032 offers the most classic combination of colours and is the one most readily found in Lange's broader distribution network, while the Yellow Gold and Platinum versions are reserved for flagship boutiques. It demonstrates how a traditional complication can be reimagined within one of the most modern designs in fine watchmaking. Its success shows how a bold rethink of a familiar complication can become a classic in its own right.
The 139.032 appeals to collectors who want a moon phase that takes centre stage, presented in a warm and classical combination. Its large lunar display, with laser-cut stars and golden moons, provides a daily source of pleasure, while its big date and AUF/AB display make it genuinely useful. The Rose Gold case and Silver dial suit formal wear and relaxed occasions equally well, and its 41 mm size gives it presence while remaining comfortable. It will appeal to admirers of astronomical displays and to those who love the Lange 1 design but want something more expressive than the classic model. For a Lange collection, it provides one of the most beautiful moon phases the manufacture makes; for a single watch, it combines warmth, legibility and poetic charm in a form that remains elegant and wearable every day.
