The Grand Lange 1 137.033 pairs a Rose Gold case with a Grey dial, one of two references with which A. Lange & Söhne launched the third generation of its larger Lange 1 in 2022. The case stays at 41 mm but was cut to 8.2 mm high, 0.6 mm thinner than the model it replaced, which changes how this outsize-date watch sits under a cuff. The asymmetric layout of the original 1994 Lange 1 is kept intact.

The Grey dial of solid silver has a grained texture, with snailed subdials and Rose Gold markers and hands matched to the case. Lange's outsize date sits at the upper right, with a slim pusher on the Rose Gold case flank to advance it, and the power-reserve indicator runs along the right side. The hand-wound movement is visible through sapphire, and the strap is reddish-brown alligator with a Rose Gold prong buckle.

The Grand Lange 1 137.033 is the Rose Gold reference of the third-generation Grand Lange 1, which A. Lange & Söhne presented at Watches and Wonders 2022. The Grand Lange 1 has been part of the collection since 2003, created for admirers of the original Lange 1 who wanted the same design on a larger scale. Its first version simply enlarged the case around the existing movement, which caused the displays to overlap; in 2012 the manufacture gave it a dedicated hand-wound movement with repositioned hand arbors, restoring the clean separation of the Lange 1's elements. The 2022 generation went further, reducing the height of the case from 8.8 mm to just 8.2 mm without changing the movement, largely through a redesign of the dial and case, and introducing a Grey dial with a fine granular texture. The result is a larger Lange 1 that feels slimmer and more contemporary than any before it, while remaining completely faithful to the asymmetric design of 1994. In Rose Gold, the grey dial takes on a warm, almost taupe character, reflecting the gold of the markers and hands and giving the watch a softer mood than its White Gold twin.

The Rose Gold case measures 41 mm across and 8.2 mm in height, remarkably slender for a watch of this diameter with a movement of this complexity, and it slips easily under a shirt cuff. Its surfaces combine polish and satin finishing, and a slim pusher in the case flank advances the date. The dial is solid silver treated in grey with a sandy, matte texture that absorbs light and allows the other elements to stand out. Gently bevelled chamfers lead from this surface down to the recessed subdials, which are finished with fine concentric grooves. The hours and minutes appear on the off-centre subdial at left, marked with Rose Gold Roman numerals and lozenge-shaped markers whose appliques were reduced to about half their usual height as part of the slimming process. To the right, the date, the AUF/AB scale and the seconds subdial stack neatly one above another, their arrangement with the time display forming the Lange 1's characteristic triangle. Rose Gold hands complete the dial. A reddish-brown alligator strap with a Rose Gold prong buckle gives the watch a warm, cohesive appearance that suits its colours.

The hand-wound movement was developed specifically for the Grand Lange 1 and introduced in 2012. Its 397 components are arranged so that the hand arbors sit slightly further outward than in the Lange 1 movement, allowing the displays to be spread across the larger dial without overlapping. Two mainspring barrels provide 72 hours of running time, and the indicator marked AUF and AB shows the remaining energy. The outsize date uses Lange's two-element construction, a tens cross beside a units disc, so its numerals can be larger than those of any single-disc date. When the crown is drawn out, the balance halts so the owner can start the watch on a time signal. Through the sapphire caseback, the movement reveals its plates and bridges of untreated German silver with Glashütte ribbing, screwed gold chatons, blued screws and a balance cock engraved by hand and fitted with a swan-neck spring for fine adjustment of the rate. Every movement is assembled twice at the manufacture in Glashütte, first to test its function and then again after cleaning and decoration, a practice unchanged since the reborn company's first collection.

The Lange 1 of 1994 became the emblem of A. Lange & Söhne's revival, but its 38.5 mm case, generous at the time, came to feel modest to some collectors in the following decade. The Grand Lange 1 answered them in 2003, and its evolution since then shows the manufacture's willingness to revisit a design until it is right. The 2012 movement restored the non-overlapping displays that the first version had lost, and the 2022 generation refined the case and dial to a degree that surprised many observers, taking 0.6 mm from its height while keeping the same movement. The grey dial of the third generation, identical on both the White Gold and Rose Gold versions, marked a departure from Lange's usual practice of matching dial colours to case metals, and it gives the two references distinctly different moods. Within the Lange 1 family, the Grand Lange 1 now offers the design at its most generous size and slimmest proportion, and the 137.033 is its warmer expression.

The 137.033 appeals to collectors who admire the Lange 1 but prefer a larger dial, and who value slimness as much as presence. At 41 mm across yet only 8.2 mm high, it offers an unusual combination: a strong face on the wrist and a profile that remains elegant under a cuff. Its Rose Gold case and textured grey dial give it a contemporary warmth that suits business attire as well as weekend clothing, and its outsize date and indicator of remaining running time make it practical every day. It will interest collectors who follow the evolution of Lange's designs, those who appreciate dial textures, and those looking for a Lange 1 that stands apart from the classic silver-dialled versions. For a Lange collection, it provides the most modern interpretation of the manufacture's defining design; for a single watch, it offers presence, refinement and history in one elegant package.
