Following appearances at the Critics Choice Awards, the Emmys, and the Grammys, Jewels Aficionado continued its 2024 awards season run at the 30th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards held Saturday night in Los Angeles and streamed live on Netflix.
Actors Matt Bomer, Sterling K. Brown, and David Furr all donned Jewels Aficionado brooches, emphasizing the men’s brooch trend is here to stay, and in fact, just getting started.
The SAG Awards are a major highlight of Hollywood awards season, which kicks off with the Golden Globes in January and culminates with the Academy Awards in March. Solely recognizing the best acting talent in film and television over the prior year, the SAG Awards show is naturally a favorite among actors, particularly as SAG-AFTRA members vote for the award winners.
Of all the major awards shows, the SAG Awards boast the largest voting body, with over 130,000 SAG-AFTRA union members able to vote across 13 categories. It’s truly an awards show for and by thespians.
Bomer had the honor of attending the 2024 SAG Awards as a nominee. The actor first rose to fame well over a decade ago as the lead in T.V. show “White Collar.” He’s since appeared in films like the “Magic Mike'' franchise among several other projects.
His SAG Award nomination was for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series for his role in “Fellow Travelers.” The Showtime miniseries based on the book of the same name centers on a romance involving Bomer’s character beginning against the political backdrop of 1950s McCarthyism and continuing through the 1980s.
It’s an unspoken rule that the best and most dramatic awards outfits are reserved for nominees, as witnessed by Bomer’s dramatic look.
His stylist, Warren Alfie Baker–celebrated in his own right as a leading tastemaker in men’s fashion–struck just the right balance between boldness and restraint with Bomer’s attire.
Bomer wore a monochrome suit, shirt, and dress shoes by Boss. The all-back look was far from boring, thanks to its interesting mix of fabrics that paired a silk shirt with velvet suit. Bomer’s shirt was slightly unbuttoned to reveal a smattering of layered, personal necklaces.
What really stole the show, however, was the oversized Jewels Aficionado brooch pinned to the actor’s lapel.
Such a large accessory could be overpowering if competing with bright colors or busy patterns, but it was right at home against the elegant, black suiting backdrop. The sparkling white diamonds provided the perfect contrast to the black outfit as well, putting the statement in “statement piece” and guaranteeing Bomer the attention befitting a nominee.
Styling Lesson Learned: To liven up a classy-yet-subdued outfit, add a blinged-out statement accessory.
From Jewels Aficionado’s collection of antique and estate jewelry, the elaborate brooch featured winding rows of baguette-cut diamonds and round brilliant-cut diamonds, all set in platinum. The cascading lines almost give the impression of movement, mimicking a jelly fish’s gliding tentacles, or, conversely, calling to mind a first-place ribbon.
Renowned actor Sterling K. Brown’s Jewels Aficionado vintage brooch had similarly curving lines and bold diamonds.
Brown was also in attendance at the SAG Awards as a nominee in the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role category for the film “American Fiction.”
He was also nominated alongside the film’s entire cast in the “Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture” category.
Based on the 2001 novel “Erasure,” American Fiction is a comedy about a writer disenchanted with Black stereotypes, whose satirical novel rises to fame for all the wrong reasons.
Brown is a Hollywood fixture, having earned a previous SAG Award, an Emmy, and a Golden Globe for his breadth of work. His breakthrough role was in the T.V. show “This Is Us.” He starred in “Inside Look: The People v. O.J. Simpson,” as well as films including “Black Panther.”
The parallels between Brown and Bomer’s SAG Awards looks didn’t stop at their bold Jewels Aficionado brooches.
Stylist Chloe Takayanagi outfitted Brown in a sleek black velvet Dior suit. While Bomer’s ensemble had a light bohemian air thanks to the unbuttoned shirt and tangle of necklaces, Brown’s rendition leaned into the black tie dress code.
The actor wore his suit jacket over a stark white dress shirt with black bow tie.
His vintage platinum and diamond Jewels Aficionado brooch featured a wavy line of custom-cut baguette-shaped diamonds, surrounded by clusters of round brilliant-cut and marquise-shaped diamonds.
The overall effect was that of a timeless, dapper gentleman. The brooch lent the look upscale drama appropriate for such a major Hollywood event.
Actor David Furr’s Jewels Aficionado brooch had an entirely different feel, proving the accessory’s versatility.
The longtime actor who has made his mark across theater, film, and television currently stars on the HBO drama “The Gilded Age.”
Alongside the show’s cast, Furr was up for a SAG Award in the category “Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.”
His black suit comprised a Charles Tyrwhitt jacket, Paisley & Gray pants, and Bruno Magli dress shoes.
Stylist Venk Modur showed that a few well-thought out accessories create a perfectly harmonious look.
In Furr’s case this meant a black tie, a pop of color via a red pocket square, and a simple and graphic antique brooch.
The antique platinum brooch by Jewels Aficionado featured a circle of round diamonds, carefully graduated in size as if an allusion to a crescent moon. The classic silhouette is subtle but impactful, making a sartorial statement but not overpowering any other accessories or the look as a whole.
