The RM 11-02 is Richard Mille's consummate traveller's watch, cramming an improbable array of useful complications into a single lightweight case. It combines a flyback chronograph, which resets and restarts timing with one press, an annual calendar that knows the length of every month but February, and a dual time zone for tracking home and destination at once. A function selector built into the crown lets the wearer switch between winding, neutral, and hand-setting with a simple rotation.

The tonneau case is machined from grade-5 titanium, its three-part construction held by the signature spline screws for strength and lightness. Behind the sapphire crystal, the skeletonised movement displays its workings in full, scattered with brightly coloured indications: an oversized date and month aperture, a sixty-minute countdown totaliser, and a second time-zone hand. Dedicated pushers for start-stop, reset-flyback, and GMT ring the case, making every function immediate to operate on the move.

There is a small word hidden on this watch, printed near one of the pushers, that carries a whole chapter of aviation history inside it: flyback. It names a chronograph function born in the cockpits of early aircraft, and understanding why pilots needed it is the key to this Richard Mille, because the RM 11-02 is, at heart, a traveller's and aviator's instrument, built around the business of measuring time across legs of a journey and across the zones of the world.

Start with the flyback itself, because it is the cleverest thing here. An ordinary chronograph, to go from timing one interval to timing the next, needs three separate actions: stop, reset to zero, start again. For a pilot flying a course by dead reckoning, timing one leg of a route and then immediately needing to time the next, those three fumbling presses meant lost seconds and lost accuracy, and in the air a few seconds of error could put an aircraft miles off course. The flyback solves it with a single push. Press the flyback pusher while the chronograph is running, and in one instant the hand flies back to zero and sets off again, resetting and restarting in a single motion, so a new interval can be timed the moment the last one ends with no gap and no fumbling. It sounds simple and it is mechanically demanding, requiring the reset mechanism to act on a running chronograph without damaging it, zeroing and relaunching the hand in the blink of an eye. That one function is why the flyback was invented for navigation, and it is the beating centre of this watch.

To that the RM 11-02 adds the second half of a traveller's toolkit: a dual time zone, a GMT. Set alongside the main time there is a second, independent hour display that can show the time somewhere else in the world, so that a person crossing between zones can keep home time and local time at once, reading both at a glance. There is a dedicated pusher, marked GMT, for adjusting that second zone, letting the wearer click it forward or back to wherever they have landed without disturbing the running of the watch. For someone who lives between continents, it is the difference between always knowing what hour it is back home and constantly having to work it out.

Then comes the quiet luxury of an annual calendar. A simple date watch has to be corrected by hand at the end of every short month, five times a year. An annual calendar is clever enough to know the difference between the thirty- and thirty-one-day months, carrying them automatically and needing correcting only once a year, at the end of February. This one displays that intelligence through an oversized date, large and legible in its window, and a month indicator, so the wearer can read the full date off the dial and effectively forget about setting it for a year at a stretch. It is exactly the kind of set-and-forget convenience a frequent traveller wants, one less thing to adjust when you are already resetting your GMT hand and your body clock.

Woven in among all of that is one more detail the dial reveals: a countdown scale, a run of coloured markings arranged around one of the sub-dials, for timing a fixed period ticking down to zero rather than counting up. It is the kind of feature a pilot uses on a timed approach or a sailor on the run-up to a start, and it completes the picture of a watch built for people who measure time in purposeful intervals.

What keeps all of this from being merely busy is the way Richard Mille lays it bare. The dial is skeletonised, opened right up so you see through to the mechanism, the bridges and gears and the heart of the chronograph all visible, and the many functions are organised across the open face with coloured markers, numerals, and scales, white and green and yellow and red, so that despite the density of information the watch stays surprisingly readable, each function given its own visual voice. It is a flight instrument panel rendered as a piece of wrist jewellery, every reading to hand, nothing hidden.

And winding all of it, out of sight, is one of Richard Mille's signature inventions: the variable-geometry rotor. An ordinary automatic has a fixed winding rotor that pays no attention to how its wearer lives, winding the same whether the person is still or active. Richard Mille's rotor can be adjusted, its winding geometry set by the watchmaker to match the wearer's activity level, more aggressive winding for a calmer life, gentler for an active one, so that the mainspring is fed just right and neither starved nor overworked. It is the same refusal to accept any part of a watch as a fixed given that runs through everything the brand makes, applied here to the humble business of winding.

All of this lives in the shape that made Richard Mille famous, the curved tonneau case that follows the wrist, built in three parts and bolted together by the ring of spline screws around the bezel, the case itself engineered as armour for the movement within. Here it is worked in titanium, the aerospace metal that is at once strong and notably light, so that for all its complication the watch wears with an easy lightness, tough and durable and comfortable through a long day of travel. The lineage matters too: the RM 11 family grew out of the watch Richard Mille built with the racing driver Felipe Massa and became one of the brand's defining designs, the everyday-wearable complicated automatic, and the 11-02 is its travelling, globe-crossing evolution, the version that adds the dual time and the flyback and turns the sports chronograph into a true world traveller's companion.

That is what makes this RM 11-02 so special. It gathers into one titanium case the whole toolkit of someone who moves through time and across the world: a flyback chronograph born in aviation that resets and restarts in a single press, a dual-time GMT for keeping home and away at once, an annual calendar that minds the months for a year at a stretch, and a countdown timer for the purposeful intervals of flight and sport. Light, tough, densely capable, and laid open so you can watch it all work, it is less a watch than a navigator's instrument, worn with the easy confidence of a design that has long since proved itself.
