About the Patek Philippe Calatrava
The Calatrava was launched by Patek Philippe in 1932 with the reference 96, a round-cased time-only wristwatch that would become the archetype for the maison's classical dress watch program. Designed with Bauhaus-inspired minimalist principles, the reference 96 established the round case, applied hour markers, thin lugs, and slim automatic caliber that would define the Calatrava collection for the following ninety years. The name Calatrava refers to the Cross of Calatrava, the emblem of a medieval Spanish military order that Patek adopted as one of its own brand symbols in the 1880s.
The modern Calatrava catalog is anchored by the 5196 and its Platinum sibling the 5196P, which continued the classical 37mm time-only Calatrava aesthetic through the 2000s and 2010s, and by the 5227 in white gold, yellow gold, and rose gold, which introduced the Officer's case with hunter-style dust cover on the case back. The 5153G, the 5119J, and the 5107J extended the classical time-only program. The 6119G and 6119R in 39mm replaced the 5119 in 2021 with an updated caliber and a slightly revised case profile. The 6006 and 6007 references combine the Calatrava case profile with elements from the Nautilus visual language for a slightly sportier interpretation.
The Calatrava Pilot Travel Time program launched in 2015 with the 5524G in White Gold, followed by the 5524R in Rose Gold, the 5522A in Stainless Steel as a Limited Edition in 2018, and the 5924G Calatrava Pilot Travel Time Chronograph. The 5212A Calatrava Weekly Calendar in Stainless Steel, the 5224R Calatrava 24-Hour Display, and the 5298P bring specialized time-display and complicated variants into the collection. The 5328G Perpetual Calendar and the 4899/901G high-jewelry variant extend the Calatrava into complicated territory. The 5088/100P Sapphire Case and the 5089G Grand Feu Enamel represent specific dial and case artistic variants. The 7130G Ladies' World Time (Calatrava-styled) and 7234G and 7234A Ladies' Calatrava round out the current program.
What makes the Calatrava distinctive on the secondary market is the combination of its status as Patek's foundational dress watch reference, the depth of the catalog across time-only and complicated variants, and the sustained collector demand across nearly all reference families. Individual references trade very differently from one another, and the reference and condition you own determine almost everything about how the watch sells.
